A neighbor asked me to sell some of his collection. There is one gun that I can't figure out. Winchester 94 commemorative chambered in 38 -55. Can anyone give me info in that caliber? I can't find a thing about it in Speer # 11.

Purdy rifle (or piece of it)...ugly caliber IMO. :)

From Lyman 49th Ed. on the 38-55 Ballard/Winchester: Introduced in 1884 as a BP cartridge...somewhat common in the '94 until discontinued in 1940. Basis for the .30-30 cartridge amongst others. "Responds well to handloading...[particularly] with cast..." It uses projectiles sized at .379in., cartridge length of 2.075in., with projectiles of 249-335Gr. at about 1000-1800fps. Anything in particular that you would like to know (that can be attained from a reloading manual, I don't know too much about it myself)?

ugly caliber IMO.

Now wait just a cotton pickin minute.
MY .38-55 in a Single Shot (model of 1885 "highwall") is a pretty little thing with a neat looking cartridge. And a good shooter. Superceded by a .40-65 only because it had trouble knocking down all the BPCR silhouette rams I hit, and I don't hit enough of them to give away points.

I can't be much help on shooting a '94, though, I load long heavy bullets to get the most range possible out of a single shot. The repeater needs the standard 255 grain bullet for hunting.

There were several of the many hundreds of thousands of Comemorative winchesters that were chambered for 38-55. One that comes to mind was the "Crazy Horse" in rifle and carbine. All were good and very good looking guns, but Winchester made so many commemoratives that most of them never really appreciated to any degree.
But still very purty to look at.
I have a custom '94 in 38-55 built to my specs to be a hunting rifle and is a fine shooter and a pleasure to use.
