I am trying to switch barrels on my Winchester Model 12. I have had no problem breaking the shotgun down, but the barrel appeared to be stuck to the adjusting sleeve and the receiver extension. After an awful lot of oil and elbow grease, I have managed to loosen the adjusting sleeve and ultimately unscrew it. I still can't get the receiver extension off. I'm specifically wondering if anybody knows if this piece screws on and off or slides on, then twist locks. If it slides on, is it from the muzzle end?

If you are familiar with this shotgun, but not the parts terminology, I am using the following page from the NRA website for an exploded diagram:

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not sure if Im following you correctlly, But Loosen the barrel clamp. And remember. First the magazine tube and then the barrel, "righty -Tighty. lefty, loosey. The reverse for assembly. They're not like most pumps where all you have to do is take off the magazine cap. Best wishes. :)

CHAS08--Thanks for they reply. My problem lies a little further down the disassembly line. I have the gun broken down beyond that. Now all that I have left is the barrel which is still affixed to the receiver extension. I have to remove the receiver extension and attach it to the new barrel so I can reassemble. I'm just trying to find out how the receiver extension attaches to the barrel so I don't break anything in the process. I already had to use a vise to loosen the adjusting sleeve and I really don't want to mar the metal or damage the threads on the barrel.

JohnBT-Thanks for your response. This is not something I knew at all. I thought that since the receiver extension and adjusting sleeve were constant to the receiver, if the barrel fit in them, it would work in the gun. Thanks for your help.

Maybe this old Model 12 will just be a home defense piece or another Gunbroker sale (I have a few home defense pieces). I had really hoped to take this gun turkey hunting in October, but an 18" barrel won't cut it.

not only will a new chamber ring most likely need to be fitted to your gun in order to attach a different barrel but the barrel extension you mention will have to be held in a special fixture in order for it to be removed from the barrel without damaging the extension. they are torqued on tight and will usualy bend B4 the barrel breaks loose without the fixture......not a do at home thing...

These shotguns were made during an era when handfitting with files and stones was necessary because the lathes and mills did not produce parts within a tight tolerance range. Thus, they became prohibitively expensive to manufacture. Manufacturing costs were the main reason that Rem introduced the 870 and Win the 1200/1300 series.

Fewer and fewer general gunsmiths have the training and experience to repair a M12---for the same reasons that it's difficult to find anybody who can work on the old style Colt actions like Pyhons, etc.

You might say that the M12 is over engineered, but this fact mainly affects manufacturing and repair issues.
