For general purpose usage, is a modern Rem 1187 a safe bet or just look for a used Premier?

i have several, a 12 ga trap- 12 ga premier and a field 20 ga., all have worked as they should with no problems for me with factory and reloads.

I have never run a newer modern 11-87, but my old Premier 11-87 circa 1991 has run everything I have put through it including my superlight 7/8oz loads. Be warned a handful of the older guns had problems of reliability that caused a bad name for Remington in the mid 90's. I'm sure there are still a few out there.

I have not really heard anything bad about the current 11-87's. If I was going to use it to hunt ducks and geese the 3" chamber is well worth it. I think in all the years I have had mine it has had a total of about 5, 3" magnum shells through it, heavy lead BB's for coyote hunting. If you don't need a magnum chamber, an 1100 would work as well.

I bought a first year 11/87 Waterfowl Mag with the 30 inch barrel for hunting ducks and geese in North Dakota. Never had a problem with it but I didn’t shoot light loads through it. Cycled all the 2 3/4 and 3 inch loads I feed it. Always thought it was kind of heavy.

I wouldn't hesitate on a new 11-87. I do recommend replacing the newer piston ring setup with the older style.

Is this what you're referring to piston seals? The new ones snap together as one piece. Why is the older one better?

2) Is the Rem 11-87 new a good buy in today's market of semi-autos? For the $ it's all steel, proven, and lots of spare parts available for <$800.

They are good shotguns. There are newer designs I prefer though, even staying with Remington. If wanting a 12 gauge I’d go V3 Sport in a Remington.

Fit is much more important to me than brand when it comes to shotguns and I believe there are quite a few good semi’s out there today, more than there’s ever been.

To me it seems Remington shotguns fit a broader range of people than any other brand. They need to though because unless something has changed the 1100 and 1187 don’t have shims.

I've never had the two-piece old style break in any 1100, nor have I replaced them for that in any 1100 I've worked on; the new 'snap-together' one that came in in my 1100 Competition Synthetic cracked after 3000 rounds. I replaced it with the two-piece old style.

Yes, good solid gun, and the new ones don't have some of the problems other Remington products have had lately.

The new ones can reliably cycle target loads to heavy 3" magnum waterfowl and turkey loads?

We have two 1187 Police models in the family, an 18" and a 21". Both marked, "Not Intended For Light Loads". Sure enough, the 18" gun does require the heavier loads indicated, the 21" digests even the cheapest low base type ammo I've tried. In the Remington armorers classes, the instructor says this is normal for these shotguns. They have both been trouble free. Were I in the market, I wouldn't hesitate to acquire another 1187.

I’ve got an 1187 Special Purpose w/real tree camo finish.
I went through a half dozen other shotguns, but it’s the “keeper”

It’s hard to believe I’ve had it for more than 20yrs.

I have 4 barrels for it!
The original 28” VR-RC barrel indeed shoots most any shell. When I first got it I primarily hunted waterfowl, but lost my taste for it.
I have a 21” VR-RC barrel that I prefer for beaver pond or flooded timber, but a guide once ask me to not use because blast was bothersome in a blind... It only feeds 1-1/4oz high vel or heavier loads. Likewise a 21” IC slug barrel. I also have a 21” cantilever RC barrel. It will feed “some” tactical buckshot and low vel slugs.

Slugs aren’t particularly accurate, so it’s been sidelined by a Savage M220, and a TriStar Raptor 20ga w26”bbl.
