Hello all,

I was wondering if you all would be able to tell me about a rifle I don't know much about as I have never seen another one in person. Not to say that I know all and have seen all as that is definately not even close to being the case. Anyway, my question is about a Remington Mohawk 600 chambered in .223 from the factory. It also has the vent rib from the factory as well. I am trying to figure out how many were made, and such info as that. Thanks to all who may have some insight.

You know about this? You can tell if the rifle was repaired if there is a raised letter "V" on the left side of the trigger.

If you truely have a vent rib barreled Remington 600 in .223 you sir have an extremely rare and quite expensive rifle on your hands.
Does the lettering say "Mohawk" on the rifle??
If it is an original vent rib it wont.
Also is the bolt black or chrome in color?
The vent ribs are not black.
Remington only made 315 vent rib .223's and they go for several thousands of dollars when they sell.
If this rifle is an original dont even concern yourself with the recall.

I can't look at the rifle right now as I am in Afghanistan. I found this site since having come into country and I thought about asking since, well it sure can't hurt. Well that and I wasn't able to find anything prior to finding this forum. I will check the bolt (when I get back stateside) and such to make sure it was factory as someone said. F350,there are a couple of the .223 caliber 600 Remingtons for sale on GunBroker.com auction site right now and you can easily see the differences between the old original vent rib 600's that were made from 1964-1967 and the Mohawk 600's that were made from 1972-1979.
Again though if you can get a true 600 vent rib in .223 for a sleeper price get it as soon as possible before someone else does.

And when the guns were being manufactured they were ridiculed. You could buy them at huge discounts. I stopped using mine because if you shot a deer, the muzzle blast would barbecue it at the same time. Mine is in 308, I can't imagine the blast and recoil from the 350.

The Mohawk 600's back in 72 were advertized as more or less short BBL camp guns. As I remember they all had vent rib's but the trigger guards were aluminum if I remember right,
They cost more than the 788's which took a mag.

Your memory is a bit foggy Frogman.
The original Remington 600's were built between 1964 thru 1967.
They sported a vent rib similiar to a shotgun and had shark fin sights.
I have an original first year model in fairly rare 6mm. and it's a little jewel.
The bolts on all vent rib original 600's were a chrome color and the barrels were lighter in taper than the later released Mohawk 600's.
The trigger guards were a nylon material.
The stocks were Walnut.

The Mohawk 600's were a remake of the old original 600's absent of the vent rib and the bolt action was black in color instead of chrome in color.
They were made between 1972 and 1979.
They also had sights that were more like the model 700.
The barrels are heavier on the Mohawks.
Frankly I like the barrels on the Mohawks more for a hunting rifle.
I have been told that the Mohawk barrels were nothing more than cut down Rem. 700 barrels.
Which makes sense.
Either way both models barrel length was 18.5 inches in length.
My Mohawk 600 in .308 equipped with a 2x7 Leupold VX-1 scope is hands down my very favorite walk hunting deer and hog gun.
Super lightweight,very accurate, and ultra deadly.
Trigger guards are also the nylon variety and the stocks on most Mohawks are Birch or hardwood.
Oddly enough though my .308,which was a first year production sports a Walnut stock and gold colored trigger.
There are still a fair number of clean examples of these very fine rifles available but they carry a price.
I love mine and I own several.

I had several over the years. The worst being one in .350 magnum. It kicked like no other rifle I have ever shot and its muzzle blast was as bad as it gets.

I had one in .350 Rem Mag.
While it was a neat gun I don't miss it. Had it been .308 I would still own it but the .350 was just brutal to shoot.
