seems to me the ring should be close to your eye for the ghost ring/peep sight system to work well. mounting it halfway down the barrel seems counterproductive.

does it actually work as well as a peep sight on say, and AR?

No, not as good as the sight on an AR or Garand. Plus it's not adjustable without tools, so it's good for a battle zero only. However, it is better than the stock sight.

I dunno about it working as well as an AR sight, but everyone I know who has ever shot one says it is a massive improvement over the standard sight.

THAT SAID, they were doing casual shooting at a range, AFAIK. I have no idea if they were taking into account and scenarios requiring rapid acquisition of sight picture.

The Ak is not really a rifle which receives alot've fine tuning to its sights, although there is a windage adjustable model available that doesnt require tools.

I love my mojo sight, its not made for super accurate shooting. It was designed to allow very quick pickup, and consistant snapshots.

The mojos work extremely well for targets inside of 75 yards. I've used them a lot on Mausers and Mosins where the rear sight is even further away from the eye than on an AK. The drawback is it's tough to do any longer range target shooting with them. Unlike a true peep sight you cannot screw smaller and smaller apertures in for target shooting.

The double aperture Phase III and IV Mojos are even better at close range off hand shooting.

I don't have a mojo but have been thinking of getting one for my nagant lately. Two things I have found are that one version is in fact adjustable for elevation, their microclick model. Seems pretty rugged. Also, I am pretty sure they are making the sight threaded to take different sized apertures depending on your personal preferance.

Every generation of Mojos is adding new features. I belive you're right about Phase IV having screw-in options. But at over a foot from the eye, there's no possibility of target-size pinpricks being utilized as with a true peep sight.

I put a Mojo peep rear on my Arsenal AK. Major improvement over the stock rear. Even though it's mounted forward, the apeerature is large enough for quick target acquisition. I've used it to snap shoot at clay pidgeons placed on a 50 yard berm.

The Mojo sights do a fine job of duplicating the sight picture provided by a true aperture sight. And they are definite improvement over normal tangent sights. What they don't do is increase the depth of focus.

One of the main advantages of aperture sights is their ability to increase the depth of focus, so that distant targets can be kept in reasonable focus while still concentrating on the sights. Since the apertures on the Mojo sights are actually larger than the pupil of the eye, they can't improve the depth of focus. Because of the long eye-relief, the Mojo's can't use a small enough aperture to really compete with a good receiver sight for aiming at distant targets.

The sight radius on the AK with a peep can't be much less than an M4.

Anyways... I have a Krebs peep sight with 0-800 meter adjustment and it's amazing. I love the ghost ring sight over the 'v' notch.

I like mine, it is very good for quick shooting and target acquisition. I do feel the stock sight, however diminutive, is more precise but for me I prefer the faster aperature picture on the AK. On most bolt guns I like the standard blade/notch arrangement.

Take out the inner aperature. It unscrews and opens up the sight to where it is more like a ghost ring. I just did it to mine and it made a world of differance.

Flip.
