I am debating between a 460 and a 500. Has anyone heard of using 45 acp with moon clips in an X frame?

Being a lower pressure push appeals to me about the 500.

Fact of having lots of 45 acp appeals toward the 460.

You can't use moon clips unless the rear of the cylinder is machined off to allow room for them.

Then the next time you fired .460 in the gun, you might get a face full of hot stuff when the case blows out.

Huh, I'd never heard of the 460 before. If they weren't so expensive, and if it's otherwise practicable (whether or not "practical"), I wouldn't mind one of those as a dedicated .45ACP revolver, with the moon clips suggested by the original poster above. That would be a sweet shooting gun (or so I imagine), and a workout, all in one.

I would have "45ACP ONLY!" (double underlined, and in 6 languages) engrave on the barrel.

(Would firing a .45ACP from such a long cylinder present problems?)

Well, I guess if you wanted an X-frame, 4 1/2 pound, .45 ACP revolver, I guess it would work if you could get S&W to make a .45 ACP cylinder.

Have you guys actually picked up one of these things?
They are huge!

I have a 460 Mag from S&W, and I love the round. Now I have Ruger 454 Casull that has a 45 ACP moon clip conversion and it works just fine. The 460 and 454 Casull's operate on the same pressure levels, so I guess you could have the conversion done with no danger of an exploding cylinder.

But I think you should see how the 45 Colts shoot out of the 460, it is like a light loaded .38 special, no noticeable recoil at all.

The only down side to the 45 ACP moon clip conversion is, the accuracy will be bad. In my 454 conversion, after 15 yards my accuracy with the 45 ACP is horrible. But the 454 and 45 Colts are tack drivers.
