Moonclip Question?

I like the TK Custom moon clips.

Having said that, I've had some different results with different moon clips.

Buy a few and see if they suit your needs then stock up.

TK moonclips are awesome and the best there is, especially for rimmed cartridges. That said for a 45ACP revolver I go to the original, Ranch Products, order in bulk, direct from them.

The TKs may be excellent, but I have balked at paying $8.00 each. I have used factory S&W and Ruger moon clips, as well as those by Ranch Products. The Ranch moon clips are more reasonably priced, and those I've used for 9mm, 10mm, and .45 ACP have been durable and trouble free..

I have TK moon clips that I've been using for at least three decades now. But if I had to replace them I'd likely go less expensive.

Im turning sour on moon clips. Got my Trr8 revolver with 8 TK clips ( I believe they are TK) anyway they worked fine with whatever bulk ammo I had. Shot that ammo and just got 600 rounds of freedom munitions 38 special and not one round will go in those clips. I don’t want to have to have a specific case for a specific clip. I don’t shoot competition with a revolver ( not at this time). I’m going to play with my speed bees speedloader and carry that if it works. At the range I enjoy loading 2 at a time anyway..

38/357 on moonclips is a very finicky setup compared to rimless cartridges like 45 ACP. The extractor groove dimensions for a rimless cartridges like 45 ACP is part of the SAAMI spec and thus is pretty consistent from manufacture to manufacture. The groove that the moonclip snaps into on a rimmed cartridge like 38/357, on the other hand, is an artifact of the modern manufacturing techniques for the rim and is not part of the SAAMI spec. This results in each manufacture having their own spec for how deep and wide that grove is. The groove is not even required and some 38/357 cases do not even have the moonclip groove. Blazer Aluminum comes to mind.

I have three different thickness moonclips for my 627 and two for my 442 to accommodate various brass manufactures. For my 610 and 625 I use just one size each, both from Ranch Products. In general, short fat rimless cartridges like 45 ACP are by far the most robust with moonclips. On the other hand long skinny rimmed cartridges like 357 magnum are the most finicky with moonclips.

For the 8-shot N-frames I have had good luck with Revolver Supply moonclips. They work really well for me once I found a good brass to pair with it. Revolver Supply are a bit cheaper than TK the last I looked. I really like Revolver Supply .025 thick clips with Remington brass in my 627. My competition setup is Revolver Supply .025 and Remington (or Starline) 38 Short Colt brass. -rambling

The TK Custom are excellent wire-EDM cut clips. Wait for their sales and you can get them for less. They frequently have deals where you can get more for the same price -- like buy a ten pack, get 5 extra.

TK are excellent and probably the best out there. If I was setting up a 8-shot 38/357 you couldn't do better but for a 625 you don't need that good of moonclip to get great functionality. The 45 ACP and the 625 just are not that picky about their moonclip. Ranch Product was the creator of the modern version of the full moonclip that made Jerry Miculek the legend he is. The last time I order 625 moonclips I order direct form Ranch got them for less than a dollar a piece and they work great. Shot a lot of USPSA with those Ranch Product moonclips for both my 610 and 625.

Left half of this image is Ranch Produce: 610 top, 625 bottom, Right half Revolver Supply 627.

If push comes to shove I could put nearly 3000 rds on moonclips between the three revolvers. MOONCLIPS RULE!

There are some clips I like more than others, but I'm not sure I've ever found any really bad ones for the .45 ACP. Those TK clips may well be the best ever, but I don't think I could bring myself to pay $8 for one.

With my 625's and 325, I've had good service out of Wilson Combat and TK Custom( the plain black OEM ones) with all different brands of brass and ammunition.

I imagine some cartridges like 38/357 are more finicky when it comes to moonclips, but 45acp is pretty forgiving.

I think what you've pictured are Stainless Steel ones. Blue steel are I think < $3ea.

When S&W decided to go with the modern full moon clip, they went to Ranch Products to have them produced. S&W provided the drawings and specifications for the 45 ACP moonclip. It works. What will a more expensive moonclip do that the original won’t do?

Wilson Combat is selling nickel plated full moonclips for $10.95 for 5.

I’d like to know where Wilson Combat clips are made?

I use Ranch at about $1.25 each.

They have gone up a lot since I ordered from them.

They were $20 + shipping for 100 last time I bought some but that’s been awhile.

They work though, moon and demoon by had using GAP brass. SPP let you reduce the hammer force more than large too giving a better trigger pull with 100% reliability.
