who the hell is Murphy ?

Howdy

I am not Murphy, but I am the one who popularized the name Murphy's Mix about 20 years ago. Yes, 1/3 each of Murphy's Oil Soap, Drug Store Hydrogen Peroxide, and Alcohol. It really does not matter if you use Isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol, you will get the same results. Currently I have 70% Iosopropyl on hand, but I have used other concentrations in the past. It really does not matter. A few months ago you could not find alcohol anywhere, but the supply seems to be loosening up now.

Moose Milk was traditionally water with about 10% Ballistol added in.

I would not use Murphy's Mix as a patch lube, I only use it to clean my guns after shooting them with Black Powder. Probably too liquid to use as a patch lube.

for those of us who don't know - what is the point of mixing Ballistol 50/50 with water to make this?

It doesn't need to be a 50/50 mix although some use it at that strength.
Since it's a dual or multi-purpose mixture, adding water helps a container of it to last longer.
Ballistol contains an acid ingredient that allows the mineral oil in it to readily mix with water.

As a cleaner, some only use enough to help neutralize the corrosive salts while not letting the water create corrosion.
Higher concentrations are often for when it's used more as a lubricant, or to help remove stubborn residue more easily.

For use as a patch lube, a water mix helps to control how much the patch will become saturated with oil.
That's how the Dutch Schultz accuracy system works, by controlling the amount of patch saturation with Ballistol, accuracy can be improved.
The ratio of the patch lube mixture can be anywhere from 1:7 to 1:4 or 1:3 based on user preference.
The water is allowed to evaporate and what's left behind is an even film of lubricant on the patch.
It's easier to add more Ballistol to the patch than it is to remove excess if applying too much.
