Mora Knives are SO Sharp!

I just got my order of 5 various Mora and Frosts Swedish knives. They are so sharp it is scary. That nordic grind with just 1 bevel sure makes a sharp blade. The ones I got were just the inexpensive utility models, 4 with modern plastic handles and the 1 classic, original Mora with the laminated blade and the little red wooden handle.

I would recomend these to anybody over much more expensive knives. I have their "Swedish Army" version which is just an olive drab version with a 4 3/8" stainless steel blade. I got if for about 8 bucks (they go for about $15 retail).

My nephew is over in Iraq as of February and I have asked him what he needs. If he asks for a knife, I am gonna get him 4 or 5 of these and send 'em over. I can't imagine any CO getting bent about a knife like that (very non-Rambo) and yet it would seem to be an excellent field knive.

Ragnar's and/or Ragweed Forge has all these.

Next stop, Puuko and Leuko...lot's more bucks there.

You may want to get some input from some of our members that have served recently and ask them if they thought the Moras will be a good fit.

The sheaths will be an important part of making the knife useful and safe to carry in a combat environment and that's the one thing I don't think the scandi knives do a good job on.

I agree completely on the sheaths. And thanks for your input. I will be keeping none of my sheaths...the plastic ones...I consider them "shipping containers" and nothing more.

I am going to make a leather one that will be just like the Air Force Survival Knife sheath for mine with a proper snap closure. If I do send one over, it will be with such a sheath. One of the reasons I am thinking something like these Moras is that some posts here have suggested that things like Randalls and whatnot are either too big and get confiscated, get stolen, get lost, and whatnot over there. One post said he had his boy over there and he bought him two or three AFSKs and sent them...which I would do in a minute...I have an old one myself.

Your input is valuable and greatly appreciated. I want young Andrew, a shooting buddy of mine since he was about 13, to have the best over there.

If I provide a sturdy sheath, do you think that will suffice in service? I am very good at leather work and it would be very sturdy...I can even dye it olive drab or leave it natural which is sort of desert tan in its natural state.

I got my Moras from Smokey Mountain Knife works. The knives are fantastic . I have several of the red wood handle and carbon steel. Really really sharp. Can t say anthing bad on these. Now the Swedish Army knife came with a so so sharpness. But i sharpened it lately with ARkansas soft then to a hard Arkansas benchstones. The outcome is so amazingly sharp. In fact I used it to scrape the callouses off the palms of my hands. It did it very well with ease. Scape it slowly and carefully to avoid cuts and it made the trick of removing the thick leathery skin. What a great knife. Buy one if you want to see how they stock up.

But I wouldnt recommend Smokey Mtn Knife Works. They screwed up my order and sent it to the wrong address. Lady who got the order is so in a hurry and never repeated back. Lazy id_ot. I waited for two weeks and no package came, found out Smokeys had UPS picked it up and gave it to USPS so it saves them money for shipping . I have to wait for additional two weeks totaling 4 weeks while it was return to sender. THey investigated and found it got loss. Finally I called them again and they decided to ship me a new set of items. Another thing , items I ordered were now out of stock. I have to substitute for something else. What a mess for one stupid mistake.

Customkydex.com has sheaths for most of the popular Mora knives. I have one of their sheaths for my 780 TriFlex Mora. Its worth the upgrade. It will set you back about twice what a single Mora costs but, because Moras are mass produced, you can get several knives that fit the same sheath.

I was going to recommend a kydex insert in your leather sheath.
