Fellow Shooters,

A few more velocities from my AR15 pistol. The temperature was 90 Degrees F and the chronograph placed 10 feet from the bench. The chronograph used was the Shooting Chrony BETA F1 Master.

Weapon- CMMG 10.3" pistol upper w/CMMG lower.

No malfunctions were noted with any of the ammunition used, including the PCA polymer cased ammunition. I didn't have time to do any accuracy testing, but I can attest that it will give 1" groups easily at 25 yards with no effort on my part.

Not to be picky but...

I don't see no numbers ? C'mon, don't be a tease, us AR pistol owners gotta stick together lol.

Sorry! :D

I gotta get used to this new cable modem. It's a bit faster that I'm used to!

I fixed the post.

Good SHooting

Thanx for the quick fix and info,

If you feel like it(read as: don't mind) would you chrono some of the Wolf poly coat? Pretty please? I got a case of it and am curious just how much punch I am giving up with practice ammo. Especially since the WWB 40rnd value packs,"punch" the arm noticeably harder  ....

Thanx for the info again...WWB it is....

No problem..I just have to wait until the next gunshow to pick up a few boxes. I might get lucky and get some at a local store if they ever restock.

Good Shooting

I'm not an AR guy, and don't own anything in .223. How do those numbers compare to what you would expect from a 16.25" barrel? A 20"?

And what is "polymer cased" ammo? Does that mean the "brass" is made of plastic?

Red, could you give the specs of your pistol? Upper, lower, barrel, buffer, etc.

Thx,
Jack

Looks like that PCA stuff is a little hot. Gets the rounds going past the 2,700 magical Fackler line. Wonder how this stuff would shoot out of those polygonal shorty barrels that MM (or something like that) was offering.

Quite a drop in velocity from a 20" barrel. 55gr. at 2600fps doesn't sound like something that would create great terminal ballistics.

Looks like load number 2 should do ok

At least at very close ranges.
Gathering info from the neat-o picture of recovered bullets from the snafu site linked above, it looks like the NATO-spec 55gr projectiles behave as follows:

Velocity
3100fps and up: snaps at cannelure, multiple fragments
(the 2700-3000fps range not pictured, but imagine it would be between these 2 ranges)
2550-2650 fps: snaps at cannelure, few fragments
2100-2400: mainly intact with few if any fragments, at upper end of this range some deformation of projectile indicating tumbling
1550-2000 (and below): projectile intact with no fragments, and little deformation

So your NATO spec Q3131 should be OK. Lets figure a muzzle velocity of 2650 fps and if we figure a ballistic coefficient of .243, it should at least snap at the cannelure out to 25 yards, and maybe get some tumbling out to say,67 yds , at 2400fps. just average rounded numbers, ok?
The bullet drop is negligible at 67 yards: only 1 inch (from line-of-bore-axis).

So there you go FWIW.

2,700 is the minimum for M193 to conistantly yaw and tumble in human tissue. According to Fackler. So anything below 2,700 you just punch nice little 22 sized holes in people. Then you end up having to shoot the enemy multiple times before they drop as evident in Somalia and Afghanistan.

Keep it about 2,700 and you should be good. (provided your using milspec M193 ammo).

Or use a lighter grain ammunition in something other than FMJ for fragmentation effects at the cost of reduced penetration through environmental targets. Some of the lighter hollowpoint of frangible stuff is supposed to exceed 3500fps out of a normal carbine. An AR pistol should still exceed 3000fps.

Redlg155, that AR pistol is cute with a Beta-C :D

Ditto on that. Imagine CCWing an AR "pistol". Imagine the look on people's faces if you say, "that's not a pistol....now THIS is a pistol" (think Croc Dundee).

I actually heard of one guy down in San Diego who CCW'ed his HK SP89 as his CCW piece.

"That's not a pistol......THIS is a pistol" Indeed! Lol, that thang is whack. Given a good trench coat and shoulder sling, however, one could ccw that.

cpileri, that picture of the fragmentation is cool, but it's as if they just forgot a row or two between the top one and the bottom 3 - sure would be nice to see the frag results in the oft-discussed vel ranges between the top row and the 2nd row.

Jack,

CMMG Lower. (I got one dedicated as a pistol lower with letter from CMMG indicating that it was manufactured as a pistol lower.)
LPK from DPMS
Numbered flatop upper w/M4 feed ramp cuts.
10.3" barrel with A2 flash supressor/ Bayo lug
Govt profile barrel (light under the handguards)
Double heat shielded M4 handguards. (Trust me...you want these)
Rock River ARMS Entry stock buffer tube
ACE Sling mount w/ foam sleeve. (You need this to hold the detent spring in place)
Standard CAR buffer and spring.

I've been extremely pleased. No problems whatsoever with my BETA C Mag or standard magazines. It runs like a champ!

Good Shooting
