Because the citizens can't be armed, only the criminals. Same old. Attacker goes in some place, goes postal with an illegal gun and in this case, a hatchet, (!)...and the disarmed populace can't do a damned thing but be prey.

How many times does this have to happen in ANY venue for any social group? Be it a bar, an office, a store...the patrons are disarmed by laws and therefore helpless, some nutcase goes on a rampage...

...and the only option the law-abiding citizens have is to die.

Man, 18, sought in gay bar attack
Three patrons hospitalized after being wounded

(CNN) -- Police on Thursday are seeking a man in connection with gun and hatchet attacks overnight at a gay bar in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Three people were wounded.

Authorities described suspect Jacob D. Robida, 18, of New Bedford as violent, armed and dangerous. He is wanted on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder and hate crimes, police said.

One bar patron suffered deep cuts on his head, and two others were shot in the torso, police said.

A bartender, who asked only to be identified as Phillip, told CNN he had a bad feeling when a man entered the Puzzles Lounge after 11:30 p.m. ET Wednesday and asked if it were a gay bar. (Watch the bartender describe how an armed man attacked patrons -- 7:17)

"At that time I was a little nervous as to why he was asking," the bartender said. "I don't know if it's because he felt out of place if he wasn't gay, or if it's because he wanted to actually find out if he's in the right place."

He said the man was dressed in a hooded, black sweat shirt, with the hood over his face, and baggy jeans. "He just had a stone cold look on his face ... just emotionless," Phillip said.

Recalling he checked the man's ID before serving him a drink, Phillip said the identification indicated he was 23, with an October 19, 1982, birth date.

After finishing the drink and ordering a second one, Philip said, the man moved to the back of the bar, watching a game of pool briefly before taking out a hatchet -- a small ax the size of a hammer, Phillip said. "He started swinging the hatchet on top of this customer's head," he said.

The bartender said he then called 911, trying to keep the phone from view, and urged patrons out the door.

Meanwhile, the attacker struck a second patron with the hatchet, pulled out a gun and shot the first victim in the face and the second twice in the head, Phillip said. A third person also was shot in the abdomen.

Phillip said he came face to face with the attacker at the bar door and the man pointed a gun at his face and pulled the trigger but nothing happened.

A helicopter transported one of the victims to a hospital in Boston, about 50 miles north of New Bedford, and the other two went to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. Police said they are in serious condition.

Shooting/hatcheting in MA, what are the rules regarding carry in bars?

my question is in relation to the CA question. It would appear that no one was carrying, just as no one was carrying in the Post Office shooting.

There was no one to stop the attack.

What are the laws surrounding carry in bars in MA? Here in Oregon, no biggie, and I do it all the time. Of course, I don't drink booze, either.

Getting a "for all lawful purposes" CCW in MA is very, very, very, very hard to do, and local sheriffs have say over issuing. From what I've heard, whether you get one depends on how leftist your sheriff is.

no kidding. I would much rather it read "The bartender then aimed on the perp with his shotgun and shot him 6 times in the chest"

Crime solved and the streets would be safer.

Huh...

Sadly, when my friends ask "why do you carry?" I don't have to look very far to find examples like this.

At least things are easier here in Oregon.

Oh, and sorry about the dupe thread :)

Not quite that bad.........

First, sheriffs have NOTHING to do with it. All sheriffs in Massachusetts do is serve civil process and run the jails.

Second, firearms licenses are issued by the chief of police of the town/city in which you live or OWN a business. Some towns/cities routinely issue full licenses, some issue restricted and some try not to issue any at all.

Geography is the major variable, rendering the licensing process a fraud. :barf:

I has gotten a lot better in recent years. I'll guess that 90% of Mass cities/towns now routinely issue "All Lawful Purposes" carry permits.

Unlike some states, there is no law against carrying in bars or other places where alcohol is served. If I recall correctly, there is some vague language making it illegal to carry if you've been drinking.

Yep. I lived in Beverly long enough to have my Class A LTC renewed twice, and I never had a problem, and neither did my two friends. A friend across the river was asked one extra question by the issuing officer, who said "why do you fear danger to yourself or your family," to which he replied, "it's Salem."

Unfortunately, Packing.org is filled with horror stories about obstinate police chiefs. One moving to Massachusetts would do well to research which towns are sympathetic.

...and given the culture, its almost assured that if the folks were in a bar, they were drinkin'. Gotcha there.

Huh. Thanks for the input!

I'd meant "chief of police", not "sherriff", what I'd typed. And from what I've heard, some can be stubborn/leftist/whatever and make it hard to get a license.
