I've been on a bit of a kick trying to replace all the memorable knives I lost over the years trimming Christmas trees, cleaning grout, getting a worthless degree, waiting tables, and turning wrenches.

One of the best I EDC'd after college was the Schrade Outback-

This was a super tough, albeit heavy folder. I used mine for everything from cutting rope and carpet to peeling apples and potatos. Lost it helping my buddy move...or it could've been at one of the bars we went to afterwards, lol. Found this great example on Evilbay a couple months ago.

Another one I pocket carried for several years in my '20s was the Buck Odyssey-

Mostly used it for cutting boxes and other miscellany while serving and bartending. That environment was pretty tough on a pocket knife, but the Odyssey worked well- at least until the tip broke off! If I recall correctly that was a common problem with these. I meant to send it back to Buck for warranty work, but lost it before I could.

I believe they made versions of this knife in both 420 and ATS-34, when that was THE hot knife steel to have back in the late '90s. Clean examples are a bit rare now, but I got lucky with a bid on this one.

Wouldn't ya know it, the end of the tip IS actually snapped off. Im going to give the seller the benefit of doubt that he didn't notice. It's minor, I can live with it.

Here's one I carried for time as a tech. Most likely dropped it while climbing through a customer's car-

Gerber Remix. There was a US-made 1st generation Remix, but this is one of the later Chinesium models. They were actually in production for at least 20 years, but it looks like they've recently been discontinued. Many reviews online complain about rough actions, but this one is quite decent.

My very first pocket knife-

Camillus Whittler, BSA edition. Bought one at the camp PX when I was 13 and practically wore it out by the time I was 14.

These were pretty cheap knives that got used hard and I probably paid too much for this example, but its in amazing condition.

I actually managed to hang onto the original for many years, but lost it during our last move 😭. It was pretty rough by that point, this one is MUCH nicer.

So, there you have it- some of my little friends. The only other one I can recall is generally considered one of the worst knives in living memory. I'm still tempted to get one just for jollies.....anybody wanna guess what it was? 😁

Awesome journey, thanks for sharing. I wasn't aware of the Schrade Outback.

Worst knife guess... Schrade Cliphanger?

My first, was a Schrade Old Timer small stockman. I got it for Christmas when I was 10. I stabbed myself in the palm while opening another gift. I learned quickly from that time onward.

I traded a lot of knives, but I have only lost 1 that I remember. It was a 4 blade congress. At about 12 years of age, I had a blade on both ends open, and I was throwing it up in the air, letting it twirl ninja star style, and stabbing into the ground. It disappeared in the yard in a nice flat, mowed area. I looked for minutes, then days, then years. I always looked when I returned to that spot as a young adult.

I had a Gerber Gator that I carried as a young adult. It was a solid knife and I've been looking to get another. Not sure that I'd carry it, as my tastes have somewhat evolved, though it still appeals to me. I have been carrying a Case XX Folding Hunter as a belt knife for the last year or so.

Back in Jr. High, I wanted one of those boot knives (made in Pakistan) sold flea markets in the late 80's. I got one when I was in High School. What hunk of junk.

Looks like they still sell em.

I had one of those, couldn't even put an edge on it.

Oh ho, still got one! 😁
Think I picked it up at the County Fair sometime in High School. This one spent one winter lost in the front yard under snow, but I found it the following spring. It actually cleaned up ok and I used it for practice with my first angle-guide sharpener. I still often put it in my back pocket when doing yard work.

We have a winner!

Yup, the Cliphanger. Don't remember ever poking myself with it, though the blade did self-close a few times.😱
Eventually, the clip broke and the thumb stud fell out. Think I threw the first one away....lol.

Went through a bunch of the Normark Big Swede knives back in the day, I'd just grab another one at the next gun show.

I lost the Kershaw OSO a friend gave me a about a year ago. It was my EDC knife, so I did replace it. I've found my trap vest likes to grab it and pull it out of my pocket...haven't lost this one yet.

I went through a few of these back in the day, too,

Those Gerber Remixes were hot when I was in Battalion. I think the NEX sold quite a bit of those.

I had that same model of Camillus in high school/college (and, unfortunately, lost it in the engine compartment of my old Pontiac station wagon while doing a minor repair), and now have that Buck Odyssey with the ATS 34 blade. I've skinned a pile of deer with that Buck.....great knife.

Something to consider... I actually handled more than a few blades in my career that had been used to cut, stab, or slash someone - occasionally killing, more often wounding... Not one of them was ever a decent quality knife. All would be considered junk by anyone that valued a good quality blade... One other minor point - actual witnesses to any assault involving knives - rarely every saw the knife being used - and on more than one occasion the victim didn't realize they'd been cut or stabbed - until after the fight or assault was over...

Good "point." (Hehehe)

Its funny how we always talk about not carrying $2000 barbeque guns because they might get confiscated after a self-defense shoot, but discerning knife carriers don't have a similar hangup. Of course, the odds of having to use a knife defensively are waaaaaaaay lower.

I will admit, Ive carried one work knife and another defensive knife from time to time. These days I EDC a Leatherman for the dirty, nasty stuff and a dual-purpose 3" folder for more delicate work.

Neat topic.. 😃

The first pocket knife that I carried religiously- 30 years ago in Dayton, OH- was the Buck Crosslock.

Heh. Two or three years later, I was working a second job in the sporting goods section of K Mart. A customer was looking at our knives, and I made the mistake of showing how fast a Crosslock could be opened (basically a lightning-quick thumb flick forward instead of swinging the blade out and around). The customer said, "Whoah. Let me see that!" a second later he's holding his thumb embarrassedly, saying, "It bit me." 😁
