I must admit to my error on the post below. After reading over the below
posts and thinking about what I had seen when examining the rifle, I
decided to go and talk to the owner again. Last time I had talked to him
I had asked him if the bolt cycled when fired and he had said that it would,
so when I talked to him yesterday afternoon I asked him if the rifle jammed
when it tried to insert the next shell into the stuck case. Lo and behold
he told me that the bolt did not cycle and that when he told me that the
bolt cycled that he meant that he could manually operate the bolt after
the shot and eject the case. The owner said the rifle shot fine but would
not cycle and insert the next round. The rifle, he said, has about 30
rounds thru it so I don't think the 'rust' look in the chamber is the culprit.

Any thoughts as to why this new a rifle would not cycle?

Sorry for the bad info on the previous post!

OK, Les. If the bolt carrier key is good (per last thread), take bolt out of carrier and look at the three little piston rings on the bolt. They need to have the gaps staggered. Sounds like they are all lined up and not allowing gas pressure to blow the carrier back. HTH

You might also want to look at the gas tube (small silver tube under the handguards), it might be plugged or bent.

This would also not allow the gas system to work properly.

Another thing to do is to assemble the bolt carrier and push the bolt back (so that the square pin holding it is in the back postion), then hold the carrier bolt-down (do NOT touch the bolt during the check). If the bolt moves down by gravity alone, there's something wrong with the piston rings IIRC.
