Mosin Fun (aka, A Good Morning at the Range)

I took the Mosin and the CZ carbine to the range this morning along with some Bulgarian heavy ball milsurp ammo that just arrived from AIM. I also took a hammer and punch to beat the Mosin into submission.

That Bulgarian ammo is great. Cheap and reliable. I had a blast! Shoot a few shots, then beat on the Mosin with a hammer. What could be more fun? I eventually overcame the Mosin's obstinance and got it shooting pretty accurately at 100yds.

Now for the sad news. After beating the Mosin senseless with the hammer, I shot better groups with it at 100yds than I shot with the CZ carbine which has a Nikon Monarch scope. It couldn't possibly be the operator. I'm blaming the cheap Wolf ammo I was shooting in the carbine.

Or maybe I outta just try beating on that Nikon scope with a hammer until it starts behavin'. Never underestimate old school!

I just picked up some of that very same ammo from AIM yesterday. I haven't put any of it through my M44 yet, but I examined it and didn't find a single defective round. (In the last batch of surplus 7.62x54R ammo I bought, I found 2 bad cartridges out of 50)

Mosins are highly underrated!

Not sure I understand the hammer beating stuff? Why?

Clean that chamber out good with a little elbow grease, and use the bottom of your palm when opening the bolt. Of course they can still be sticky once in awhile, but I've neer needed a hammer!

As far as accuracy goes, Wolf sux, with the exception of Wolf Gold which is made by PRVI. If you want better accuracy from cheap Russian factory ammo, I suggest looking at Brown Bear/Barnaul. My 1942 M39 Sako with Barnaul 203gr softpoints has produced 4 inch groups @ 300 yards on occasion. No fish story here either.

Mosins are just so friggin' cool.

Front sight windage adjustment. I posted last week describing how it was shooting 4" to the right at 50 yards. At 100 yards, it was off the target paper. But I put a hammer spanking on it and it shoots straight now.

use eds red homemade bore cleaner and a twenty gauge bore brush from the breech end . dont get into the rifling but clean that chamber good

Yeah, Ivan the peasant wasn't to adjust his rifle in the field, and they didn't want the rifle to lose it's zero when dropped tot he ground after Ivan the peasant got shot, so they staked those sights pretty darn good.
