Word on the street is they tend to be pretty beat up. It might be worth it to get a hand select for bore. The price is a lot cheaper than the Russians and a TON cheaper than the Poles. Not too many new batches of Mosin carbines around these days.

I don't think the Chicoms counterbored or recut these bores, so even the rougher ones may shoot surprisingly well.

I have sold a couple crates of them from this batch. 9 out of 10 had really ratty wood. All were mismatched, with about 75%bluing, but the bores were all good to excellent. I haven't seen any that were counterbored. They are every bit as well built as the Russians, but seemed to be used a lot harder in worse climate conditions.

I just got a "U-Fix-Em" T53 from Century International for $55 bucks. Only things bad wrong was no cleaning rod and the wood on the underside is trashed. A replacement stock is being searched for and I got a cleaning rod for $15.

Most T53's dont have cleaning rods to begin with. The wood is pretty ratty on most mine was pretty beat up but not terrible. They have very good metal finish on the few I have seen and the triggers are much better then there russian brothers. I have a 1954 T53 and a 1944 m44 and the t53 will out shoot the russian all day long I would have no fear about not getting a great shooter for $100 it may not be the best looking rifle in the world but they can shoot!

I have shot a couple Chinese type 53 rifles. A 2x4 should be part of the cleaning kit. When the bolt gets stuck the 2x4 will be required to free up the bolt. I have never seen a Chinese type 53 with matching serial numbers.

With a little work or an aftermarket stock the chinese rifle would be a good looker. I have never seen one that would pass a basic inspection.

I haven't seen one yet that's worth getting. Everyone that I have seen is beat to death, crack stock, and shot-out. Everybody around here want $149.00

Unless you've actually cleaned out the bore, there's no way to know if it's shot out. I know quite a few people with guns from the most recent batch and the wood is usually a anywhere between fair-ish and pathetic. The bores on almost all of them are excellent and they shoot very well. I'm thinking of getting one and turning it into a scout-ish rifle.

I've had 20 or so of them come through my shop.

They are butt ugly beat up, no matching numbers, most/all of the blue finish gone from the metal.

That said, the actions are slick, they lock up tight, and the bore is generally very good.

They will shoot reasonably well, but will never win any beauty contests for sure.

I have 2 of them, both are good shooters. Stocks weren't the greatest, but some sanding, and a little filler and they are both equal to my M-44's.

I have two T53s, one from SOG. Wood was alright, metal was good and the barrel was a whole tube of cosmo. Awesome bore on that one. The other one was from somewhere else and a bit beat up, not so great bore. The beat up one is a cabin gun now and the SOG one is my main Mosin shooter. Both shoot great, but the one from SOG is noticeably better.

Be careful* with the wood, its the Chinese anti-rot wood. Not the tough "break down brick walls" Russian wood.

* By careful, I mean don't try and break down a wall or slam the stock on a rock.

all the ones I've seen have rotten stocks and mixed serial numbers....

other than that they seem to have smoother actions than the russian rifles so given a new stock they would probably be a decent buy.

The LGS got in 15 or so a few months ago. The bores looked mostly good, but the wood was junk on every single one of them. There were two or three with matching numbers, but those went very quickly. I would have paid $120 for one, but not the $150 they were being sold for.

I owned one of the Chinese rifles along with some Russian and Polish and the one rebuilt by the Finns. The Finn 39's were unerringly accurate esp Chinese ammo. In the carbines the Chinese built one was by far the better shooter. I got tire of the Mosins and took them all to my dealer to sell for me along with surplus ammo from 5 or 6 countries incl. China. Everything sold out pretty fast except the Chinese rifle and the Chinese ammo. Some guy eventually bought the Chinese rifle and a case of the Chinese ammo. A week later he came in a bought the remaining 2 cases of Chinese ammo and told my dealer the rifle was the best Mosin in his collection and the ammo best surplus he had ever used. Cases were brass and bullets were copper jacketed.
