I have decided to practice my shaping abilities by recontouring the original stock into more-or-less the shape of the stock I will buy later. Who knows, the euro-shape of the Mosin's stock might be more in keeping with the look I want anyway than the rollover comb of the Richards stock. I have thinned the butt and wrist to about 1 5/16", and started blending the forend at the step. I'll fill the holes for the sling and cleaning rod and continue rough shaping with the belt and disk sanders. The birch has decent grain, and will probably look pretty good in walnut stain...I hate working with wood though...
