Nice writeup. That stock came out very nice looking. FYI, AIM Surplus has M-N accessory kits with a sling, pull-though, oiler bottle, and combo tool for $9.95 + S&H.

That's a nice one. Those marks on the side appear to be standard powder and steel proofs. You can look them up on www.7.62x54r.net or www.mosinnagant.net

The stock was pretty much beyond hope as you found it, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over redoing it. As long as nothing is hacked I'm a big fan of taking steps to preserve stock wood rather than letting it stay filthy and exposed. Did you use tru-oil or BLO on that?

You can probably improve your groups on that by making sure the receiver screws are tight and checking for stock contact with the handguard removed. Run a dollar bill back and forth under the barrel, and it should be free. If not consider shimming it Finn-style with some brass shims at the receiver screw points. That almost always helps. Also, handloading or using better ammo will give you better groups. Every Mosin I've owned has a "sweet spot" handload it really likes. Most shoot pretty well with either S&B 180's or Wolf 200 grainers, but rarely with both.

I bought mine 2 year ago , its a hoot to shoot (pun intended) . Surplus ammo is cheap and I believe Tapco still has some accessories and spare parts on hand . I'm going to try to use mine for hunting this year since a coworker of mine found some quality soft point ammo in his recently deceased father-in-law's residence . The only down side is my shoulder sure suffers a bit after a 100 rnd day of shooting . Enjoy your new baby :)

Century Arms- www.centuryarms.com - has some wonderful ammo
that will make your Mosin Nagant much easier on the shoulder.
It is item AM1295A and is called short range training ammo. It is
83.87 for 1152 rounds of 7.62x54r.
Here (hopefully) is a link that gives all the specifications for this military
surplus ammo. www.7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo013.htm
This ammo has a very high velocity, and will make a water filled jug
explode. The regular ball ammo just makes a slow leaker.

okay...another victim of milsurpitis.....i have an M44...love it...looks like a boat oar but a great rifle....if you are looking for another mil surp..grab a Swiss k31 while you still can....if you apreciate the Mosin....you will really like the K31

marshall3,

very good review and that is a great job you did on the stock, i really won't to redo the stock on my sks but i am a little hesitant, i don't want to screw it up, but I did a pretty good job accessorizing my remington 870 so i might give the sks a chance.

For mosin owners; what kind of accuracy are you able to get out of these things and do they shoot extremely high at say 100 meters, I know my czech mauser does. and have discovered why thanks to fellow THR members.i have thought about a set of mojo sights. I like the milsurps, not all but a few and I would really like a finnish 91/30 to add to the collection along with an FN-49 and a spanish FR8.

I just picked up a Mosin Nagant at a local gunshow for $100. It has a hex receiver and is dated 1929. It is setup as an 91/30, but I believe that it is an ex-dragoon rifle. The only other thing it could be is a 91/30 prototype, but I am putting my money it is an ex-dragoon. If anyone wants pictures I will post.

I think that this is one of my favorite rifles to shoot. Ammo is cheap and accuracy is pretty good, it is a great low cost rifle!

possum, mine shoots right on at around 100 yards as far as shooting high/low using surplus ammo. Using aftermarket ammo it shot high and to the right.

I'll give a better number, it was about 3 inches high and 2 inches to the right using after market 203 gr soft point hunting ammo. Sorry, should have stated that in my previous post. If you buy one and it shoots high, you can get a taller front sight and that will bring it down.

dwave,

were could i get a taller front sight post for a mosin and while we are at it where can i get one for a czech mauser? thanks!

Possum, I don't know where you can get them, but I found this on http://www.7.62x54r.net:

Q. Where can I find a taller front sight?
A. It depends on the model. I'm not aware of a source for taller early blade type sights. The post on the later globe type sights can be replaced from the bottom, after removing them from the barrel, with a finishing nail and then filed to length. Taller blades for the later Finnish models (M27, M28, M28/30, and M39) are available from time to time. Placing a "wanted to buy" on the collector's trader boards is a good way to find them.

AH-1, I don't have any pictures at the moment, but I will get the digital camera out and post some later tonight or tomorrow morning.

AH-1 here are a few pics. I tried to get a good pic of the markings, but I was not having any luck, but you can make out the date and the factory mark. It's a 1929 Tula. I still have a little cleaning to do, that cosmoline on the sling slots was dried on when I got it. Over all a nice piece, it has a few dings in it, but for the most part the wood looks great, and the inside of the barrel looks great. If you want some other pics of it, just tell me what you want, and if you can throw me a few pics of your rifle.

dwave,

thanks for the link, i will continue to surf around and see what else i can find!maybe a taller front sight and a mojo rear sight. oh and nice looking rifle i gotta get me one!

I was very impressed with the way the 91/30 is balances when you shoulder it. For such a long rifle I was expecting it to be barrel heavy.

Very nice find Car Knocker. I think that I would personally find another sight to do that mod to that way I could keep the original one alone.

The Mosin Nagant balances very well for being a long rifle. My personal opinion is it is one of the best starting rifles you can get, and even if you are not a starter, it is a great add-on to any collection. I have been shooting rifles for 18 years, and I still love to shoot one.

the mosin, in my opinion, is the most versatile bolt rifle ever made. not only can you get them for 100 bucks in darn good shape, but there are more ammo mfgrs for that round now than ever before.
