My question is what would i have to do to legally remove the stock on my M91/30 and put a pitol grip on it?

some basic information
bolt action rifle
5 round magazine(not detachable)
bayonet can be attached directly to barrle
barrel lenght alone is 28inches

i know it would not be considerd a short barrled rifle, what i am wondering is would it be considerd a AOW because of this modification, it would be around 30 inches long when finished, have a 28inch barrel, no action/magazine modification.

and, how far would i have to take it to make it a AOW, my goal is to avoid going that far, but i still want to make a stockless gun outa an 80 dollar rifle

As far as I know, as long as the barrel stays the legal limit as well as the overall length remains legal it's fair game.
Minimums: Overall length is 26", barrel is 16".

I'm sure someone is going to "oh no your ruining a piece of history".

what i meant was that, with out the part of the stock that goes to your shoulder

and fatcat, it just sounds like a fun pistol idea, and i can brag about having a pistol suitable to be used as a scout snipe weapon

and to anyone worried about me ruining a 80 piece of russain scrap metal that just happens to be a gun, im not going to modify the original stock, im going to buy an cheap replacement to play with

i plan to doing this during the summer, unless anyone has information that this isnt quiet legal without some paperwork/tax stuff

I can't think of any way you could make a Mosin into a NFA firearm simply by modifying the stock.

Go for it and have fun--I'm opposed in general to modifying milsurps, but I have no problem with doing it with common Mosin variants.

uhh, you might want to learn to shoot the "scrap metal" first before doing your "scout sniper pistol" modification. Have you even shot the thing? Do you know how accurate it is?

i dont know who you're gonna brag to about having such a "scout snipe" weapon whatever that means but i know i wont be very impressed

that's my honest $.02

i was just jokeing about all that :)

i do want to have the biggest pistol on the block, but more to have a fun gun to shoot

what i meant by scrap metal is that i can go and buy another for 80 bucks, that they are so common that it wont be hard to find another one, that theese rifles where exported out of russia as scrap metal. and that on a scale of one 1-10 on rarity, both of my nagants are 1's, i can go out and buy another of either of them

i have shot them, i have used a small variety of ammo, including heavy ball milsurp ammo, and lightball steel core, and just about anything in between

and the stock on my M38 is cracked, nothing to bad yet, but if i replace the stock, i dont want to spend the same amount as i did on the rifle to return it to original state

Well, I have no further use of this thread, if a mod wants to delete it, its fine with me, or whatever happens to old threads

In Alaska your are sometimes required to carry a 12ga if you go outdoors in bear country and a lot of folks opt for a 12 ga pistol grip shotgun. A pistol grip 7.62x54R (perhaps from a 1953 20" barrel carbine) might fit the same niche.

Uh, have you fired a Mosin yet? From the shoulder? I'd sure recommend shooting at least, say, 3-4 rounds from your shoulder, and THEN decide if you want to attempt shooting it with only a pistol grip.

If you do, have someone with you to drive you to the hospital to splint your wrist.

ok, seeing as people dont think i have shot my rifle, i will tell you the i have shot over a hundred rounds of 7.62x54r through my m38 and a around 50 through my m91/30

i weigh about 280, so i think i can handle the pistol, not that your opinions really matter to me any how, i just wanted to make sure that i stay legal

Not illegal as long as OAL limits are respected.

having a pistol suitable to be used as a scout snipe weapon

It would be a rifle, not a pistol. That's an important legal distinction. Specifically, it means the weapon shall forever be bound to the rifle OAL and barrel length limits. If you want to make it an Obryez Mosin you need to abide by the NFA rules.

It also would not be suitable for use as any sort of "scout snipe weapon." You could use it at blunderbuss ranges and have a bit of fun, but that's about it. Just don't hold it up to your eyeball!

You will miss that stock the first time you fire it, and miss it again when you try to work the bolt.

"...still want to make a stockless gun outa an 80 dollar rifle..." And turn an $80, non-NFA, reasonably decent rifle into something that is totally useless?

in a word, yes

it wouldnt be worthless, it would just be an interesting gun to shoot ever once and a while. if i needed a self deffense gun that required 3000plus foots pouds muzzle energy it woul be a good go to gun also ;) but i have my preferences, and you guys have yours, i know that i can legally do it now, thats good enough for me

It's been done, albeit with a shorter, pistol-length barrel. And those were used in war by soldiers! What's the big deal? If someone can shoot it as a pistol, why not a full-length rifle with pistol grip? I say go for it, and post pics! :D
