Even with a clean, burr free chamber on my Mosin Nagant M44, getting my bolt handle all the way up after shooting steel cased ammo, there are times I have to give the bolt handle a moderate, upward rap with just my bare open palm . Do you think this could be damaging to the extractor & shorten it's life, or were they made to tollerate this level of force? Once the handle is all the way up, it takes very little effort in pulling out the case . Thanks for your opinions.

I think that is just fine and your rifle won't mind at all. Mine 91/30 is the same way with some steel case ammo.

you'll do more harm to your hand. i used to keep a 6" long piece of a 2x4 for opening the bolt with steel cased ammo. the handle from a small wooden hammer workes well too

The chamber is probably a little gooey from cosmoline. It took a while to get mine clean, and now the bolt is much easier to open. With steel cases not as easily as with brass cases. With brass cases it is as easy as a Remington, IF you use plastilube on the bolt lugs, raceway, and on the camming surface of the receiver.

Properly greased and properly DEgreased of cosmoline, the rifle is smooth and easy to operate.
