I don't really know much about mosins except how to rack the bolt and shoot them, so I figured I'd ask you guys about these two options I'm looking at.

The first one is an arsenal refinished $99 mosin from jgsales. I was going to select the hand picked bore option for an extra $30 if I chose this one.

The second option is a MO marked mosin from jgsales. Its $119 and arsenal refinished. I have no idea what MO marked means or why it costs more.

So which one would be the better option? What does MO marked mean? And is the $30 hand pick for bore quality worth the extra money?

Here's the links for said rifles:

Unless YOU are the one searching through the crate and YOU hand pick the rifle, never pay extra for hand picked. The only thing you'll get hand picked is coming out of some guys nose.

Small batch of "MO" marked Russian Mosin 91/30 bolt action rifles chambered for the 7.62X54R round. These rifles will feature an MO Marked Hex receiver (for Ministerstvo Oborony or Ministry of Defense.) These were rifles that were removed from the Army and reissued later to the MO, and they usually have a double dated receiver based on this reissue. (Some dates may have been scrubbed due to the refinishing process.) These will either be manufactured in the Izhevsk or Tula arsenals. Expect dark counter bored barrels. Includes the Russian soldiers bayonet and possibly some other accessories.

Hex receiver mean the rifle was a pre-36(?) date of manufacture. After 1936, receivers were rounded to ease production, lower cost, and push more rifles out the door to shoot at Nazi's.

A dark counter bored barrel is not the mark of quality.

Spend the base price for the less expensive M91/30, use what money you saved on ammo.

I completely disagree with the previous post.

First, J&G is OK, but not the best price. Go to Classic Arms and you can choose exactly the type of gun that you want.

They've got the same rifles for $20 0r $30 less.

They only charge $10 for hand select, and in my experience, it is well worth it. A $30 hand select fee on a $100 rifle is too high of a percentage(30%), but a $10 fee on a $80 rifle is much more reasonable.(12.5%) Are you going to get a rifle that's 30% better, not likely, but 10%? absolutely.

I recently ordered a izzy from them with a 1923 date and perfect bluing stock and shiney bore. It was $89 plus shipping.

Classic is super easy to order from and they are good people. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

So, you can rack and shoot a Mosin...Do you know how to engage the safety? I've met lots of owners that did not.

The arsenal refurbished rifles will more than likely be your average run of the mill wartime Izhevsk 91/30 unless you can request otherwise. Nothing special, but great solid rifles.

MO marked means ministry of defense, and these rifles will have a slash and then a second date by the original date and sometimes even a third date which is pretty rare. The MO marked mosins should not be of any better quality than a standard 91/30, just unique. Handpicked is worth it.

Tula stopped production of hex receiver 91/30's in 1936, and izhevsk stopped production in 1935, but some rare examples exist of re-barreled war time rifles on hex receivers, I have one of those examples. I will provide you with a picture of an MO marked mosin of mine and the 1943 tula hex.

That statement was meant as sarcasm...but if I remember correctly you pull back on the back of the bolt and rotate it, which is usually more trouble than its worth from what I've read.

Pull back, and rotate to the left.

WE CURRENTLY HAVE IN STOCK A VERY SPECIAL SELECT LOT OF HEX RECEIVER M91/30 7.62X54R, BOLT ACTION RIFLES . ALL OF THESE RIFLES ARE CONSIDERED EXCELLENT PLUS CONDITION AND ALL FACTORY STAMPED MATCHING SERIAL #'S ON THE RECEIVER AND BOLT. SOME OF THE NON-ESSENTIAL # MARKINGS ON THE FLOORPLATE OR BUTTPLATE MAY BE A STRIKE THRU OR FORCE MATCH BUT NONE ARE ELECTRO-PENCILED.
THEY ARE A MIXTURE OF TULA AND ISHEVSK MANUFACTURE.
THE RIFLE YOU SEE ABOVE IS AN ACTUAL PHOTO AND A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE. HAVING BEEN THROUGH THESE RIFLES I AM ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED YOU WILL NOT FIND A HIGHER QUALITY BUNCH ANYWHERE IN THE MARKETPLACE.

ALL RIFLES WILL COME COMPLETE WITH A BAYONET, SLING,
AND COMPLETE ACCESSORY KIT.
ITEM # M91-30-HEX.....$99.99......$89.99

** TO CHARGE A HAND PICK ON THESE WOULD ACTUALLY BE UNFAIR TO THE BUYER, THEY ARE SIMPLY ALL SELECT RIFLES, HOWEVER, IF YOU HAVE A SPECIAL REQUEST SUCH AS LIGHT OR DAK STOCK... ETC...

I was reading about those as you were posting that =p
They seem like a very good deal. The only reason I listed jgsales as my options was aimsurplus was sold out. Never heard of classicarms though. Thanks for the suggestion.

go with the handpicked option its worth it especially from classic arms where its only 10bucks. I love my mosins but for the love of god BUY A GOOD RECOIL PAD. These things suck on recoil. I have one m44 that I left alone and another that I painted fire engine red and am in the process of putting a scope and rail system on. I want to make a tactical mosin just for giggles.

Classicarms is a good resource. I just hate the layout of their website.

I just think charging for a handpicked is more of a gamble than it's worth. What might be the best of 10 rifles in one crate could easily be the worst of 10 in another. Thats why I avoid buying pretty much anything sight unseen. I'm not paying $30, or even $10 for someone else's opinion of "Best". YMMV.

In general, I hate sending business to classicarms but in this case the previous posters are right, classicarms has the cheapest and what has generally speaking been the standard price for a Mosin Nagant (ie less than $100).

I doesn't sound like it would be worth it to you to buy a MO marked M-N, especially with J&G's outrageous handpicked fee (handpicked should really only be about $10, $30 is highway robbery). If you're getting to the point where you're going to be paying $150 for a Mosin Nagant, IMHO it's time to look at spending an extra $50 and getting a Mauser (like a Yugo M24/47) as they more compact, much better safety, etc. So in summation, go with classicarms.com because J&G and AIM have really pushed the price envelope it seems.

I suggest you buy in a local private sale. I bought my Mosin that way and it worked out great. I got a great condition, well cared for rifle that I got to actually hold and inspect before paying for, and I got it for as much or less than you pay to buy one online.

I payed 99 for my first one from a gun shop 2 years ago. I wouldn't pay more for handpicked, I've done it before with varied results.

Why? I've bought a dozen guns from them over the years. The prices are always good, the descriptions are accurate, the customer service is great, and they support the things that I believe in.

Firmly grasp the bolt knob with one hand and the forearm with the other. Do not attempt to pull back on bolt knob, at forearm, shove the rifle quickly and forcefully forward while holding bolt knob back and twisting to the left. Its so easy that way, even a wimpy caveman can do it.
