Mossberg 500 Cruiser

I have the 8-shot persuader 500. I keep the stock on it, but mine also came with the pistol grip. I've tried the grip-only setup out, and...yea, did not like it. It's easier for me to just chicken-wing over the buttstock should I need to cut down on the length of my gun and/or not shoulder it.

I have 3 500's one in .20ga standard bird setup, a 12ga similar to yours and another 12 with extended mag tube, heatshield 18 inch barel and an ar type extendable stock on it. All three are treated bad, tossed around, neglected and just generally used. I have yet to have any failure of any kind that i can recall. To me they are truck guns which is the best kind. Dependable. I also have 1 870 that I love and it's been just as dependable. I only have one because I haven't found another yet.

I don't see 500's as particularly attractive...thank god. I would never had treated them as I had and used them as much to totally deem them as reliable.

Me too. The #50577. I think it's a near perfect compromise of capacity, weight and balance.

...I don't think a pistol grip is good idea either, unless you absolutely must to keep the stored-size to a minimum. Pistol-grips surely don't enhance the function.

+1

I've got the exact same gun with the Mossberg peep sight kit on it. It's going to get a couple coats of flat black Duracoat, then do "fire extinguisher" duty.

I bought a cheaper model for HD, the Mossberg Maverick 88. This shottie is about 1/2 the price of the 500 w/o any fancy bells and whistles on it. Works great for a closet gun for HD. I did have to pay a little extra for the pistol grip and front swivel package though. JMHO! :)

I have the exact same model as yours, Smokey; just purchased it yesterday. It's going to be my truck gun.

I own another Mossberg 500 with a wood stock, but it doesn't fit so well where I wanted to keep it. My dad still has one of the originals from around 1960.

I have the persuader myself, just like the link above. 20" barrel with the magazine to match. Kicks a little harder with that synth. stock, but she's still reliable, and I think she's pretty, in her own way

I just purchased a Cruiser Tactical this past Sunday and had my first range experience with it today, which leads to this question (how often does that ever happen?).. the safety kept kicking in, even though my hand never left the pistol grip. It did not do it every time and the switch sometimes kicked partially on and other times went all the way on, but there was no logic to it. I'm guessing this is not normal and I also called Mossberg and they said it is not normal. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I do not like it because it means I cannot fully trust it to shoot when I want/need it to shoot.

BTW, the kick with the pistol grip really isn't all that much at all. I was expecting a bucking bronco and it was more like my SP101 with a hot .357 Magnum round.

I have the persuader as well. Added a heat shield and a metal safety button and it's as good as it gets for HD.

rd2007, your experience is not normal. Take it back to the dealer; they should either fix or replace it since it is a new gun.

There may be a folding stock in my future, but I'm still practicing with this and the grip isn't as bad as I'd been told. Gotta say, shooting this is a LOT of fun.

Thank you rmfnla. I guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow..

I was checking out folding stocks, thinking I was going to need one, but I think the pistol grip will be just fine. I definitely need some more practice with it and also need to see how my wife handles it. She thinks my AK is rough, so I'm sure she'll love the Mossberg... :D

I use the pistol grip on mine and I think it's great.

Just rememebr to allow the gun to move under recoil instead of trying to hold it firmly and you won't get beaten up by it.

Had one just like the OP back when I was young and uninformed (pre internet days). After one trip, that pistol grip was replaced with a full stock.

The heat shield is a joke.

I have made one up like that w/a Sidesaddle, light, wraparound forearm, ported barrel, and one of those jokes-of-a-heat-shield over which I smile myself contentedly to sleep nightly.

It's gotta be better than actually touching the barrel, which I managed to do several times today. Not even close to AK-47 hot, but it was pretty warm. I have a tendency to do quite a bit of rapid fire, so they tend to get warmer than usual. The Cruiser slowed me down a little, but not too much. I shredded the target in no time.

Took the Mossie 500 Cruiser for her second outing today, and felt like I was starting to get a feel for loading, firing, etc. One of the range officers came over, an old guy - maybe 130lbs wet, and was asking me about it. Then he asked why I wasn't holding it up and sighting down the barrel.

Turns out he really likes PGO and gave me a quick clinic in handling a cruiser config. The best position I found was front arm out, slightly bent and pulling toward me, hand on pistol grip almost below my chin but a bit to the right, arm parallel to the ground and straight out from the shoulder, pushing toward the forend. Whoa.

This actually works a whole lot better than bracing against the hip. At this point, I'm rethinking adding a shoulder stock now because I can use this weapon exactly as I'd envisioned using it. There's just some technique to practice. As much as I enjoy the handguns, this thing leaves me laughing it's so much fun.

I moved from the "shooting gallery" point-blank area they have over to the 15 yrd patterning range and put up a target. Most of my shots were dead-on but low, hitting the dirt below the target. Plenty to work on. We'll see where we are 500 shots down the road.

Per suggestion, I added a sling so I can secure it if transition to handgun, and the side saddle increases ammo capacity but you can keep the gun trained on target while reloading. For my HD needs, this is enough SG.

I have almost the same one.
I changed out the stock pistol grip for the Knoxx "Breacher's Grip" that has a stiff spring to absorb recoil on the wrist. It works great. I could shoot that thing all day without a sore wrist.
I'm actually thinking of buying another 500 in .410 for a bedside gun.
