I have had over 45 semi auto shotguns. I often waterfowl hunt with a Remington 3" Wingmaster. Because I like to. Works as well if not better than anything else, because I shoot it well. If you want an excuse to buy a new gun go for it, but that 500 will do the job.

definitely don't want to buy a new gun but don't want to look like an idiot wounding birds or have the gun tear up. I am trying to find some fields and the guys i will be hunting with are actual guides so just trying to get ducks in a row.

How old is the gun or choke tube? Besides a new steel r

If your using the same ammo and choke tube your going to get the same results as any other gun.

If the guys or guides have't given you any advise on what to use and hold their nose up over a Mossberg 500 maybe you should get someone else to hunt with. Plus all that counts is to kill the ducks or geese where you can retrieve them. Only time I've seen them in a row is in a old time shooting gallery and they were pop up metal ones. Go shoot some honkers!

I deer hunt with one of them and he said hes goose hunting now and I said I would like to go and he says find a field and ask permission and we will go. I just want to make sure I have ducks in a row if the opportunity does come up. He said the pump should be fine but get a good choke and ammo. Both shoot $1500 bennelies so I'm a little intimidated. I kind of felt dumb last week shooting my 4th deer ever and kind of forgot how to field dress a buck. Trying to not have the dumb feeling anymore.

I don't meen to make you feel bad but why don't they invite you to try goose hunting where they already do?? Why do you as a "new" goose hunter have to find a place to bring them??? Maybe it's me but it sounds like BS and maybe you should find someone new to hunt with. JMO but I know the type and wouldn't waste my time. Besides if your a good shot a 2-400 Mossberg 500 wouldn't look good out shooting some 1500 buck European snobs on their hunting grounds.

you know I'm not entirely sure. The one guy lets me deer hunt his farm with him so probably wants me to find my own spots. I used to break 23 out of 25 clays back in the day so I'm pretty good.

Gun is about 7yo

I'm sure theres more Mossberg 500s being used for waterfowl than you could ever imagine. Besides the millions of Honkers they,ve taken. Do some homework and get the correct tube and shells. You don't need a 10ga or 3 1/2 12ga. Good luck.

Scooter22 couldn’t have said it better. Your 500 is plenty adequate for geese. Do stick with the 3 inch ammo though. I have found BB, BBB,and T shot to be the best suited shot sizes here in South Texas if you are using steel. I have also found that in almost every case, an improved cylinder choke patterns the larger shot better at longer range if you only have your factory chokes to choose from. For Duck I prefer a modified tube with #2 or smaller steel. Buy a box of BBB, screw an IC choke in and pattern it at 30, 40, and 50 yards. Don’t be discouraged by the lack of a dense pattern, you’re only working with about 70 pellets, look for even distribution of the shot. It only takes one pellet in the right place to kill a Snow goose or Lesser Canadian. We don’t usually see Greater Canadians down here. Good luck and have fun!
