I'm considering installing a ghost ring on my 500. My 500A's receiver is drilled and tapped (four in-line holes) for a weaver-style base. Does Mossberg's GR rear sight use these holes, or does it require an additional set of holes? Or is there an alternate sight system that uses the factory holes? Thanks.

Hi there Legionnaire,

I emailed Mossberg with that question before and they responded that you can mount the ghost sights using the holes.

Here is their service department email for questions:

The front sight however is a completely different issue and involves drilling and tapping the old barrel or buying a new barrel with the front sight already installed. The sights are $65.00 and the barrel $125.00.

I just had a gunsmith silver-solder the front sight to my existing barrel. Much easier than drilling and tapping, and much cheaper than a new barrel!

Thanks. I have an 18.5" barrel with rifle sights on it already. I wonder if the front blade is high enough, or if I'll need to replace it. Figured all I'd need to do was paint the facing surface with some high-viz white paint and remove the rear sight. But given feedback thus far, I'll probably order the sight set and NOT a new barrel. Sure wish Mossberg set their rifle-sighted barrels up with standard dovetails ...

Question is your rear sights attached to the barrel?
If they are the front sight will be too low to be used with the rear Ghost-ring sight.
I know you are trying to save money but the cheapest and easiest would be to by the barrel with rear ghost-ring kit.
You would need to increase the height of your front sight to use mossberg’s ghost ring rear sight with the barrel you have now.

Take a look at the kit on this page
