Mossberg 500 series - to get or not to get...

Hi folks-

Today I was wondering into a local gun shop that I like, and found a used Mossberg 500 series in their 'tactical shotgun' rack. It's actually just a plain jane 500 12 gauge, without a full length mag tube. It's probably a 5 or 6 rounder I imagine. Price was $250, pretty good condition. I think it's the persuader, but it's parked so I'm not positive.

To get it, or to forget it? It was so light and handy feeling that I felt really drawn to it. I've been wanting something for deep woods walking and maybe a 'bang around' gun for the truck and car camping trips.

I've already got a good 870 Police, but it's setup for home defense and is too heavy to haul around much (full tube, side saddle, and surefire forend).

So what say ye folks? Go ahead and get it as a spare/woods gun/truck gun? Or be happy with what I've got?

Is the price right?
 
Unless you feel the need for another defensive shotgun you are buying something you already have. Both the Mossberg 500 and your Remington 870 will do an equally good job. Nothing wrong with buying another shotgun but I would buy one that fills a different need since you already have a HD shotgun.

If you are going to keep it in your trunk then buy it because that's a fair price IMO.
 
He said he thinks it's a Persuader. If it is they usually run right around $400 new. If it's in good shape $250 isn't that bad, besides, it's used so he can try to talk the price down some more. If it's a plain 500 then it is too much since I bought a Mossberg 500 Field/Security Combo new for $239.

Really? My local Academy has a new Persuader for $250. That includes the pistol grip (not sure if it can be used with the stock) and it's a 6+1 with 2 3/4 ammo. They may be calling an ordinary 500 a Persuader, but it's still one heck of an HD gun.
 
In that case it is too high. I wish we had those prices here but there are so few stores around they can charge what they want.

My 500 combo came with a 28" barrel, a 18.5" barrel, the wooden stocks and a pistol grip along with a few chokes and a choke wrench. I can shoot clays in the day and change the barrel for HD at night... gota love it!
 
Thanks much for the speedy reply, gents. I'll have to peek around some of the chain stores and see what they have in stock for new. If I don't find anything and the used one isn't still at the shop, then it just wasn't meant to be!

Thanks for the price checks, if you don't keep up regularly with specifics, it's hard to make a fair judgment.

Man made prices, but the internet made them equal.LOL. I was trying to find a clever way to say you dont have to pay local prices if you fell they are exorbitant. I prefer to buy local, but if I feel that I am being gouged, and the local vendor wont at least try to be more competitive, I go to the WWW.
