Ok well I have a brand new MOSSBERG 500A. I installed a sixshot sidesaddle and noticed that it would not cycle as the pump was stopped by the sidesaddle. I then just cut a small part off the pump handle and now the thing wont insert a round. I pump it back and the shell sitting in the magazine wont release. I press the release and then I have to pry the shell (dummy) up into the chamber just to get it out. Not sure why this is happening. I am thinking that the shell bed (the silver piece that feeds the rds into the chamber) is not going down all the way or something is blocking the release from releasing the shell.

If you ONLY removed a part from the wood or synthetic making up the fore end, and no metal, you might just not be pumping hard enough! I had that exact problem when I first bought mine. They LIKE to be handled rough. Try pumping it like you mean it.

nope treated it like it had just beaten my AR nice and rough and still nothing

Maybe a good rule of thumb would be to not add anything or remove anything (especially if it involves "cutting"), until the weapon is first tested enough "as factory" to be proven reliable.

FWIW,
Les

it is a MOSSBERG 500 they are known as the definition of reliable as well as the 870 remington variants.

If the elevator isn't all the way down, the pump handle still isn't going far enough back. Sounds like the sidesaddle is a poorly designed piece of junk.

well i did a functions check I had cleaned it about a week ago and have not used it ever. Just bought it about 2 weeks ago.

Ok I think I know what it is, just dont know how to fix it. The lever that needs to be pressed in order to allow a round into the chamber is not depressing enough to allow the round to pop onto the elevator. Not sure how to fix this.

You mean the cartridge/shell stop? If that is truly the problem it can be adjusted (bent) carefully. First take the sidesaddle off and see if it functions without it.

The cartridge stop is pressed against the side of the receiver (and off of the rim of the cartridge) by a ramped area on the slide action bars near the rearward travel of the bolt slide/action bars. if indeed the stop is not being moved far enough out of the way to allow the release of a shell, field strip the gun (basically all you have to do is remove the trigger group pin and the stop and interrupter will fall out of their grooves in the receiver) and you can carefully put it in a vise and slightly bend the stop outward (i.e., reduce the inward curve at the end), reinstall, and retry. Go slow and try it often. If you go too far the stop will not prevent cartridges from dropping out of the magazine on the ground and/or double feeding.

you did not fire the gun prior to making a modification it sounds like you have no experience doing. add to this fact the fact that im assuming you do not even know how to fieldstrip the gumn, therefore are not fully aware of how it operates mechanically. the reliability of the weapon is irrelevant here because YOU have introduced your own variables.

OR could it possibly be installed wrong? already we're blaming the gun and the product when we clearly have an inexperienced handler. you do know that one of the symptoms of overtightening the receiver mounting screw is failure to cycle, correct?

You had someone else clean your weapon? Why? Try this :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKbWcPdTRBI

Watch the video, fieldstrip and clean, cycle the gun without the shell holder installed, then carefully reinstall and see what happens.

I've been there done that and blamed the equipment when a little know how on my part could've solved the issue. Not trying to be rude, just being matter of fact.

I am by no means inexperianced I had one 2 years ago before I went to Iraq and sold it thinking I would want a semi when I get back, but have gone back once again to pumps. I never have anyone else fieldstrip my guns as I only trust myself. The gun is brand new. I am not blaming the gun. The sidesaddle is admitadly most likely the cause as I made the mistake of buying it and not looking at the comments and seeing that the piece requires modification to make it work. I do all my own gun work and when things get over my head which happens I come here for your expert opinions.

I'd recommend that you remove the sidesaddle and reassemble with the stock pins. THEN see if the gun functions before you start adjusting internal parts. If the gun doesn't work stock, get it fixed under warranty.

PFC... thanks for your service.
Some people like to jump on others quickly instead of asking questions or getting more info. I ignore the static.
Remove that sidesaddle, try it out, then if you want reattach and mode the side saddle. Personally I cant stand sidesaddles... I prefer shell cases or dump bags. If the gun is a HD, and you think your going to need 8+1 plus 5 or 6 in side saddle for instant ammo supply, you might want to rethink your neighborhood!

Reassambly to "factory default" is a wise suggestion.

So, I don't know if it is but TacStar sells 6 and 4 round sidesaddles -- did you read the instructions carefully? The shorter ones are in case the forearm on your particular gun is too long to work with the 6 which WILL stop the gun from working. Additionally, note the caution about overtightening the screw that is used and goes thru the reciever -- it COULD be squeezing the reciever closed as its a hollowed-out piece of metal. Also check the channel of the arm where you put the other screw to ensure it was perfectly clean in the corners.

For the time being I am setting this up as my 3 gun shotgun. I know the problem i have still not removed enough off the pump to allow the gun to cycle. Thanks all for the advice it is always appreciated

Bingo - The forearm is likely still hitting the side saddle and preventing the action from going all the way to the rear .

Take the sidesaddle off. Does it now work?
I went with the 4 shot sidesaddle on mine because of that very problem.
