Mossberg 500......

Mossberg 500s are very good shotguns. An 870 may least longer, but the difference will not be obvious in our lifetimes. I'd expect at least 30-40,000 rounds out of a 500. Maybe a lot more.

Had 500s been around in the 50s and had Pop given me one instead of an 870, I doubt my life would have drastically changed.

As for PGOs, the archives are full of my comments. They're not good in the real world.

I suspect the great majority of people who claim to hate the P/G have never even shot one, and certainly would never consider owning one.
That certainly may be true of the general population, but change the terms to "a great majority of the people here in the Shotgun forum at THR ..." and it certainly isn't true.
Is that the way most folks read THR? I don't. I love this forum, but I go to "New Posts" so I can look at everything. Shotguns, rifles, pistols, legal, it's all interesting.
I stand by my observation, most people saying they hate the P/G never owned one.
But that's okay. I listen to everyone's opinion and make my own choice.
In the general population of the country, I suspect most people don't care one way or the other. (although, I find most have guns at home, they just don't talk about them.)

I'm curious why you'd think that. It seems like you are just guessing about the motivation of people that you don't know anything about, but I suppose you might have sort of crystal ball that I don't know about.

I can't speak for anyone else, but here's my take:

I've owned a PGO, I bought it because I thought it was cool, and didn't know any better. I found it to be nearly useless for anything except blasting away at stuff from the hip (not that it wasn't fun).

I took a shotgun class, and would have been left behind with a PGO.

I don't like the pistol grip stock on the Mossberg specifically because you cannot work the safety with your hand in a firing grip.

I prefer the straight stock on my shotguns so my manual of arms stays separate in my tiny little brain when switching from AR to shotgun.

I prefer the Mossberg over the Remington based solely on my perceived similarity in quality, the major difference being the safety on the Mossberg being ambidextrous.

I prefer the 590A1 over the standard 500: ghost rings, upgraded parts, heavy walled barrel.

I am a well-known Mossberg liker on this and any other forum.

I have owned and shot PGO M500s. They never caused me pain but I have large hands and thick arms. I find that for my style of shooting they did not give me the balance and gun-handling that I did my best with. Once I went back to traditional stocks I found the guns balance better, handle better, and allow me to put the gun on my shoulder and take deliberate shots. Plus, I have pointed out MANY times, have you ever tried to deliver a butt-stroke with a PGO?

If you like your PGO hey it's your gun. I don't like them and I don't recommend them for first-time home defense buyers.

I have never broken a M500 plastic safety button. I have seen them broken so it is possible. I wouldn't spend $15 for a metal button. I have one M500 with a metal button; it's an old gun and came that way factory.

I've got a Mav88 with a pistol grip adjustable stock (M-4 style).
With the Mav88, the safety button is like a Rem 870, just in fron of the trigger guard. The Moss500 has a top tang safety, making it ambidextrous.

I like the Mav88 with the PG stock, but would agree that on a Moss500 manipulating the safety would be a trick.
