I recently purchased a brand new Mossberg 500a and am loving it. The only problem i have found, is that the action slide assembly seems to be scraping the anodized coating off the magazine tube when the weapon is pumped. This "scraping" is evident in the area the "pump" moves over when pumped.

After taking the weapon apart I believe I found the culprit. Inside the slide assembly where it fits over the magazine tube there are small bumps that are digging in to the magazine tube.

While the damage at this point is merely cosmetic, I worry that over time the perforations could dig deeper in to the tube. Is this normal on all Mossberg 500s, or do I have a unique problem? :?

The "bumps" can been seen here, they are machined and uniform.

here you can see the effect of the scraping, keep in mind that this weapon has only been cycled a couple dozen times in its life.

The picture above shows the indentations that create the bumps from above. The only thing I can think of is that Mossberg may have put them there to stabilize the slide along the magazine tube and prevent rattling? Though it does take its toll on the magazine tube.

Any thoughts?

The dimples are actuly there to help take up some of the slack between the OD of the magazine tube, and the ID of the slide action bar assembly. Perfectly normal for the finish to be effected rather rapidly on the Mossbergs.

Nothing to worry about - shoot and enjoy.

It's called "character." It's a GOOD thing. See if you can generate some more of it by shooting the heck out of your Mossberg.

And be proud of it, don't worry about it. It won't hurt anything other than cosmetics.

my 500 did the same thing, and I've seen a few at gun shows like that as well.

Hate to say it...but it's normal wear and tear. You could touch it up with a sharpie if it really really bugs you.
