hello.


i'm looking to get my last toy for this year, a Mossberg 590 but first i would like to know what you think about this shotgun

I own the one in the picture. I like the heat shield and lighter barrel. You NEED that Mossy! OOPS! Mine has the stock that holds extra shells. Think about that one, it's nice to carry 4 extra shells tucked away in the butt. (guns butt)
 
+1. These are great guns, from the inside out. You just can't go wrong! But...

They are not mutually exclusive. I have the same lighter 20" only w/a custom Poly-Choke. 8+1 plus four in the stock. With its disconnector its about as versatile and potent as anything can be. I also have the 18.5" 590-A1 heavy-barrel, etc., w/an extension - 7+1+4. Get both, but there is something to be said for the lighter-weight arm, at least for me especially in the the longer one (with a bayonet of course).

just got one from gallery of guns. Have not shot it yet but I wanted it to compliment my 870s and defender. Plus I already have the bayonet for it:p
 
I have an older Model 88 with a 20" barrel and heat shield. It's almost exactly the same...full length mag tube and all. I love it. Also have a 500 Tactical with 18" barrel and collaps stock. They are both great shotguns.

I would buy it without hesitation.
 
They're just fine. A few folks in recent months have reported factory 590 magazine springs that lost their tension, but mag springs are cheap and easily replaced with Wolff springs.

Also, watch the heat shield and magazine cap to make sure everything stays in place. Guy in my shotgun class a few years ago had one of those, and the magazine cap was slowly loosening over the course of days of hard shooting. As the mag cap loosened, the barrel crept forward because the heat shield was in contact with the receiver and was moving slowly backward under recoil. As the heat shield moved back it kept pushing the barrel forward.

It eventually pushed the barrel forward far enough as the mag cap unwound that the bolt couldn't lock up in the barrel extension. Everything still felt tight when it was checked, but it eventually became plain what was happening. When we figured out what was going on, he took the heat shield off and left it off.

I have the same gun except w/ the speedfeed stock. The speedfeed things I've found more or less useless. I've removed the heat shield as well.

I've only put maybe 500 rounds thru my gun but haven't had any issues. The safety really takes some breaking in though, it was originally so stiff it hurt to switch it off.
 
I like the 590A1's as well..Mine is about a month old...18" barrel ,6 shot....I put a hogue short shot stock on it....Awesome gun...

I have the exact same one. It takes either the M9 bayonet or the M7 bayonet from the M16A1 (I've got one of each).

I love mine. It shoots a lot softer with slugs than my fully rifled 870.

Heatshields on guns, when loose, creep forward, Lee. Not back. That's why Mossberg adds a spacer bar to the *front* of the shield if it's not braced directly against the barrel mount lug. That's what that bar-shaped thingy is for. 590's have a ball detent the same as most other factory shotguns. They loosen no more than any other. The ones you have to watch out for are aftermarket extended tube guns like the 870. As to springs, as always, take second hand info with a grain of salt. It's often not worth much more than that.

One slides down a smoothbore barrel with little resistance, the other hits the lands of the rifling and forces its way down.

Murphy, this is Rich.

That might be what's supposed to happen. That might be what happens to everybody else. But I can absolutely assure you it definitely wasn't what happened that time. It took only two turns or so of the mag cap loosening up to keep the bolt from locking, and the cap still felt tight- in fact it wouldn't tighten against the barrel ring. And the heat shield still felt tight too. But the barrel was forward enough in the receiver that the locking lug couldn't engage the barrel extension and the action wouldn't lock closed. Figuring out what had happened on the line was a puzzler, but that's what it was. When he took the heat shield off, the barrel pushed back into the receiver, the mag cap tightened up and as far as I know he had no problems for the rest of the class.

LOL Sorry, I thought'd be clear after the earlier reference: 7 in the tube, 1 in the chamber and 4 on-board in the SpeedFeed stock.

As a moderator had to explain, sometimes what you have in and on the gun is all you're likely to easily get to: accordingly, I favor tested SpeedFeed stocks that hold four rounds vs. a sidesaddle which complicates the arm, becomes a potential obstruction to usual and customary handling, and takes the gun slightly off-balance. I won't entertain stock-socks and even less so ridiculous slings with shell loops which are known in the trade as "pendulums."

I want to like the 590. I really really really want to like the 590. But I also have a rule about black guns in my house. I just don't like them. I can't say why. If Mossberg offered the 590 with a wood/blued setup, I'd be all over it. I guess I'm just old school like that. I like my old 500 Persuader with its banged up walnut stock or Pop's 37(which still has yet to see the range).

It is *now*. It wasn't then. lol That one had me puzzled! I was thinking an 18.5" barrel with a 25" mag tube??? ***?

I'm a firm disbeliever in sidesaddles, too. Always have been. They make the gun awkward, they make the gun heavy and slower, they snag on everything, and they actually slow you down in reloading in the long run. Very few if any law people and NO deployed military people use them for those same reasons.

anybody in here want a 3-dot 18.5" 590a1 barrel? Check my other posts or the buy/trade section. It's dead-accurate and offers superb patterns, but I'm looking to add a heatshield and a bead would be much cheaper. I'll also trade straight across for a bead sight A1 barrel in similarly good condition.


Not trying to advertise, just offering a heads up to those who may be interested.


To the original poster, I'd look at an 18.5" 590a1. It doesn't hold as many rounds, but is overall a more quality shotgun base and there are extensions available (Max100, you make such a great product it is worth the WAIT :D). However, the standard 590's are very quality and I do own one (a 20" 9 shot mariner) and have owned a few varietys in the past and have been happy with all. Buy a replacement Wolff spring or two to keep on hand though, the nature of the long tube can cause a bind up. If you do get a 590 20", I would "break in" the spring by only loading 6 or 7 in the tube for the first 50-75 shots and then paying attention not to try and force a 9th shell in after that. That's usually what causes the springs to bind/deform.

What do you mean regarding the disconnector?
 
Disconnector, referencing that in my old 590 one can hold the trigger down and it'll fire as quickly as you can pump the action.

The 590 at the top does have a bayo lug and utilizes the mag. cap too.

The short 590 A1's at least have neither.
