Well, I am about done with my new 590. I did not like the plastic on it, so swapped with wood... cleaned up the gun, repainted the dots in the ghost ring and cleaned the wheat out of the barrel.

I bought the gun at a gun show from an old guy wandering around. Got a great price on it and am going old school on it. I like the heavy barrel and the thing shoots like a wet dream. My next purchase for it is going to be a heat shield from Aimpro.

What say the hive?

I am thinking of stripping the stocks and staining them and see what interesting effects I get, then BLO them till they glow dull...

I reworked my wood furniture completely and re-stained it, using BLO to finish it.

I'm going to build a heat shield for mine from scratch, because I hate how the aimpro/mossberg ones look.

Looks good, I recently gave my 500 a similar treatment, but without the corncob handguard mine doesn't look near as good as yours. Good work, leave the black plastic for ARs.

Mango: that 590 is looking good! I have been wanting to remove the rubber from the butt stock on my 590A1 (similar to 1kperday's) and go with a plate just like yours for a while now...but haven't gotten around to it. Where'd you get the plate?

Creature, I actually found the plate on a 70's police stock (may have been from an 870). They actually are quite common from what I've seen. Metal or plastic, they are pretty often just discarded so you can usually find them very cheap.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack Dravur's thread. Looking good!

I just bought a Mossberg 500 in a .410 ga and took out to the range. At 35 yds on a turkey target at ground level with 3" no.4 shot it had 11 pellets in the neck head area. Not so sure this is good, but I will be using it here in North Ga. this coming week. You have a great looking gun there.

Just curious but what purpose are you serving by doing that? I've got a 590A1 with a Bantam wood stock that has a 13" LOP and it has the rubber on the end of the buttstock.

I have found that the rubber pad on my 590A1 often catches and "grabs" at my shirt when bringing it up to my shoulder from various positions. I have a found that a smooth buttstock cap like Mango shows is very easy to shoulder quickly and smoothly.

The wood furniture is definitely an upgrade. I am not insinuating anything here fellas but this is just a general statement: even bad wood looks better than plastic.

He is right about that. I had that exact problem, and it's one of the reasons I opted for the plate. Sticky rubber on a shirt sleeve (especially a loose one) is a bit of an annoyance.

Just a preference thing.

Quick fix for the sticky butt pad is just wrap some electrical tape around it. Doesn't look bad if you do it nicely and it slides much nicer.

Apparently, all it takes is a wood stock to fool me into thinking those pictures were of something a doughboy would take into a trench in '18. 590s really don't look like much with the all-black stocks, I guess nothing does. :) With wood it becomes a true gentleman's gun. A gentleman who needs eight rounds of 12-gauge, apparently!

Wood has its limitations, but it can make just about anything look nice, or at least presentable. (Somebody but wood stocks on his AR-15 and put pictures on one these forums ... that looked fine!)

NICE shotgun! Great trench gun look, with the functionality of modern sights! That's the exact setup I want for my 590A1 when I get a chance to work on it.

Where are you guys finding the wood stocks for your 590's? I understand there is a difference between the current guns and those made in the '90s.

Yeah I ran into this problem trying to install the wood corncob slide on my new production 590A1. The new guns have the two slide rails directly molded into the plastic slide, so you can't remove them. Really annoying. You have to buy a separate slide tube assembly. It's explained better in this thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=473125

Goodness but that Mossy is purdy! I would like to do the wood thing...but the pachy grips/guard are a bit more forgiving methinks.
