Mossberg 590A1 forend swap trouble

Hello,

I recently received a nice birch forend from THR member Blue Brick which I am trying to install on my 590A1. The problem is this: after completely taking the forend assembly out of the gun, there doesn't seem to be a way to remove the plastic grip from the metal slide assembly parts. The slide assembly seems to just be embedded in the plastic. I've found instructions online which say that there is some kind of retaining nut at the front of the forend, but mine is smooth and seamless.

I thought forends were supposed to be interchangeable between the 500/590/590A1 models. Did I make a mistake? The gun is the 18.5" barrel with ghost ring sights if that makes any difference.

Probably doesn't help you much, but I had so much trouble attempting to remove the stock on my 590a1 that I gave up and sold the stock lol

All of them are interchangeable, NF, btw,my wife loves your name, but you have the infamous Maverick 88 forearm. The Mav 88 is Mossberg's lowest cost gun....and they get there by cutting out every possible penny in manufacturing. It's not a low quality gun, just a low cost one. The standard Mossy forearm is wood, and wood can't hold the action bars with any real strength, so they mount that wood forearm on the action slide tube with the retainer nut on the front. To cut costs on the Mav, they did away with the metal slide tube and just pinned the bars directly to the plastic. On their tactical guns, they figure everyone's going to want black synthetic anyway and it's a big seller from Mossberg for that reasonm so they've started using the standard Mav one piece instead of the Mossy steel tube.

To put that wood forearm on yours, you'll need a Mossy steel action slide tube with the nut.

Dark Knight, remove the trigger group on your gun and rotate the stock a half a turn or so....it'll release all the pressure on the stock screw and you can remove it easily then. When reinstalling a stock, hold the stock 1/4 -1/8 turn off the center and screw driver it snug and then turn the stock that extra 1/8 turn to get it solid.

I changed the fore-end on my 590 as well.


I, too had an extremely hard time taking the metal tube out of the fore-end assembly.



Oh, but I'm going to cover all bases here...


At the front of the fore-end assembly, there are two notches in the metal tube.

Use something metal or the spine of a knife like a screw while twisting the foreend to unscrew it.

Ummm, a Mav 88 forearm has no tube to take out. The bars are pinned directly to the plastic. If it has the tube and front nut, simply removing the nut with a butterknife acting as a forearm wrench lets the forearm slide easily off the action tube.

If you have a Mav 88 forearm there *is no tube to remove*.
