$140 or less used is fine if you have one you like to sell.

I have a bone stock 10/22 and love it to death, but mines about 2 years old and I've heard that the new ones come with a less aesthetically pleasing finish (paint?) and plastic pats in the trigger mechanism. Dont quote me on that, and I'm sure someone else will chime in on this. That being said, I would definitely look for a nice used 10/22 in any flavor, as you'll probably find some within your price range. I have heard very good things about remington 597's, although if you go that route, it seems as though the newer metal mags are much better than the older plastic ones, but they are interchangeable as far as i know. THere is tons of info on these guns available here and at www.rimfirecentral.com Good luck with your search, semi auto .22s are loads of fun for little cost

i have an old 10/22 and its my favorite gun, now they added a new clip ejection button that makes it even better.

marlin mod 60, assuming we are only talking about semi autos. the mossy is a copy of the mod 60, and it can be hit or miss, on reliability, as far as how it is made. next i would take the savage. I have had all 4 of these, at least twice now, and speak from lots of experience. The ruger is actually the funnest and the best, and has the highest resale, but you will never get it to run as accurate as any of the others, and you will never get it to run as reliable as any of the others, without several mods and upgrades.
Oh sure, there will be a dude come along here, or one that has allready posted, as I have not read previous posts, saying they have had an out of the box r1o.22 for 165 years now, and it shoots ant size groups at 400 yds, and it has never had one misfire, even with mud shoved into the bbl. That is all fine and everything, but he is about 5 to 10 % of the owners of the 10.22 this has actually happened to.
This coming from someone who actually right now, has a nicely modded, yet understated 10.22, that with about 100 dollars in upgrades, plus a pro-modded trigger group, done by a guy who has been working on 10.22's since they have come out.

oh yeah , the remmy 597 is the only one with factory fully adjustable rear and front sites, and has many aftermarket parts for it now, just like the 10.22. but heck, they run good, once you take the action apart, put the rails back in , just barely back in enough to put it back together, so the rails are nice and loosey goosey, and it is nice and accurate. Also if you like to shoot with just irons, these are the most adjustable.

Bull

The Rem 597 is a great buy for the money, it has a decent aftermarket, notable reliability and accuracy. I can see it giving the 10/22 a run for it's money in the aftermarket in a few years.

I said that about the 10.22, not the remmy, I am a big fan of the remmy, you just have to do two things; get the latest generation mags, on the bottom a 10 inside a circle. then you have to pull the action apart, pull the rails out the back, and then just put them back in, hand tighten, and just enough to close the action back up. so the rails are nice and loose. they are usually put in too tight from the factory, and this condition can cause the rails to bind on the
bolt assy.
