the 535 and 835 are over bored shotguns. that can take 3.5 inch shells. they are good turkery and duck guns from what i hear. the use the AccuMag chokes

My question was to vague sorry guys. I decided to purchase it.

Is there anywhere I can go to find out more information about my particular 835? I am bought it used from an FFL here in CA. Model, how old it is. The paperwork says the Serial number is UM138xxx

If you go to the havlinsales website you'll find contact information for Vic and Cheryl Havlin. They also run the Mossberg Collectors Association.

They will probably know when, approximately, the gun was manufactured.

Neither Havlin nor Mossberg's corporate site offer a serial number lookup feature that I can find.

You can download an owners manual straight from mossberg's site though here:

Be forewarned: 3 1/2 inch turkey loads will smack the crap out of you. A person I met in Walmart of all places gave me a tip: you can make a recoil bufffer in the stock by using lead split shot and sealant foam which will tame the recoil a good bit.

I don't understand. That being said, it's not that bad. The only time I've fired 3.5's was when there was a goose in my sights though, so I probably wouldn't have noticed anyway.

3.5" turkey loads at the range do hurt. When fired at game the adrenalin typically tames some of the punch. 3.5" buckshot isn't too bad really.

You can get a limbsaver pad for it which will help a good bit as well. Also doesn't hurt to have someone who knows how to fit a shotgun to make sure the stock is properly fitted to you.

Last season, one weekend I shot a box of 3.5" steel shells while duck hunting with my 835. The recoil didnt feel bad at the time, but the next day I was hurting. Lots of soreness, and a nice nasty bruise.

I stick with 2.75" and 3" shells now. :D
