Anyone here ever owned or shot one of these things? Picked up a nice one in trade this weekend. Shoots great and functions. Doesn't seem to be a jam-o-matic lien these seem to be. Anyway this thing is pretty harsh on the shoulder compared to my 500's. Seems to be anyway. I put maybe 60-70 rounds through it Monday. Mostly light stuff, a few duck loads. My shoulder was pretty neat up. Today I put 10 ducks loads through it function testing after my first tear down and cleaning. 10 was all my shoulder could take. Call me a pansy or what ever but it seems worse than my pumps. Even the kids at the range looked ask me what the heck I was shooting, said it seemed a little harsh.

I'm not a small guy. 6-2 300 lbs. I'm not complaining at all either just curious. This is my first auto shot gun as well. Never shot one. All of us have pumps. Also this is a 24 inch barrel turkey federation synthetic stock version.

Thank you all!

It's fairly light. Maybe it doesn't fit you well. A gas action will attenuate recoil more than any other type action. Add weight and/or better recoil pad. Shoot a Benelli Super Black Eagle One with the wood stock and some 3-1/2" loads and it won't feel so bad by comparison.

I ran across one with a 24" barrel used close to 20 years ago that I bought for my 10 year old son as his 1st shotgun. Had the stock cut down and he killed a few dove with it. It is gas operated and we always felt recoil was pretty mild. Recoil should feel less on the 9200 than the 500's. Buy one of the newer high tech recoil pads for it.

Sounds like a gun fit issue to me; especially if light loads are bothersome. BTW, there's nothing non-macho about saying recoil hurts. It is a cumulative and seriously debilitating issue that cause a LOT of issues down the road.

What do you mean by fit issue?

I could be way off too. I didn't shoot it a lot yet. I'll put a couple hundred through it Saturday shooting with a friend so I will know for sure then and can compare it better.

As far as recoil pad yea the one on it is hard and I've been contemplating replacing it.

There is a lot more to proper fit than a recoil pad or length of pull; there is also the drop at heel, drop at comb, comb thickness, cast on or off, toe in or out and the degree of pitch to consider. Most folks have to tweak one or more of these to get the gun to fit them (and not have them trying to fit themselves to the gun). Scrunching down on the stock or similar indicates a bad fit and a bruised cheek is likely to happen

I had one for a few years. I liked it and shot fine for me. It was light but not too bad. Maybe it doesn't fit you right. I dunno.

I'll shoot it more this weekend. I do know the but pad is hard as a rock. Bad design. Scheels had a limb saver for a 9200 tonight but it didn't fit so I returned it. Looks like it needs the regular one for a 500. I checked tonight it's the same as my 500's. Of corse no one carries those locally. Jack wagons.

I probably just need to shoot it. I was shooting at any specific target and I went through ammo pretty fast and wasn't squared up. If it turns out I don't like it or it doesn't fit me then I'll trade it off. That's how I got it anyway.

I need to do a little more reading on stock fitment. I did a little but need to do more.

I have never shot a shotgun "squared up"; but then I enjoy shooting moving targets which are best shot using an off hand forward foot position so you can use your hips and legs to swing either way for the target. Fit is key to comfort and successful results.

OK I was wrong. This thing actually doesn't kick too bad, probably less than or similar to my pumps. I must not have put it in my should decent Monday. I dumped 75 rounds of duck and trap loads through it in about 10 minutes. Then Wednesday was all duck loads with a bruised shoulder. Put 150 through it today with 0 issues and no sore shoulder.

I'm surprised I got a decent one. From reading on the net it seems as though it's a 50/50 shot whether or not you get a good one. It functioned well. At 50 rounds I switched from Walmart cheap federal to Walmart cheap Winchester. Gun was cold as my buddy had just shot 50 rounds, air temp was 35. First shot ejected fine but 2nd round didn't load all the way. A light push on the bolt and it went home. Shot another 50 without indecent. Again cold gun switched back to the Federal and had 3 out of the first 10 do exactly the same thing as the first Winchester. Once the gun warmed up it was fine and the other 40 rounds ran perfect. What I'm gathering is that either
A. The loads were light or B. the gun was starting to get dirty and with it cold it wasn't moving freely. I did work the bolt and it seemed a little slow until it warmed up so I'm guessing it's more the temp and grit in the gun. Should have run a couple heavy loads through it when it was cold just to see how it reacted. Either way I'm satisfied given how much I have in it and know it's reputation.

Also I know I need a new o'ring and that may help some as well. Will probably run the gas block through my ultrasonic cleaner as well.

It felt like an old friend shooting it too. My other two shot guns are a monkey wards branded 500 with wood stock and fore, and a woodlands camo synthetic stocked 500. The camo gun I never felt 100% confident with. Shoots awesome but I could also hit better with that monkey wards. This 9200 felt like that monkey wards. Other than when I wasn't taking serious shots it was nailing them.

Thanks for all the comments!

As I recall, it has a self a gusting gas system. You should be able to download a diagram that shows how it goes together. If it needs an O ring that could be the problem. If it hangs up cold it probably has oil or grease that is old or too stiff. A good cleaning and fresh synthetic oil should take care of that. That gun is an Updated S&W model 1000. If clean and oiled and in good repair it should work fine. They are not great quality and could have worn or out of spec parts. Glad it is working better for you.

I cleaned it the other day and oiled with synthetic. The shells I used were pretty dirty from the looks of it.

When I first got my 9200 I decided to give it the "works" in terms of breaking it in. In one afternoon I ran 250 rounds through it, everything from low brass target loads to high brass field loads. Not a single problem with any of them. Barrel got a little hot but the forearm did a great job keeping the heat away. Recoil felt like it was very light although in all fairness I was wearing a PAST shoulder pad at the time. Still it didn't seem to have much of a kick to it and was far less than my Maverick 88 produces with a Limbsaver boot on it. All in all I have been very impressed by my 9200.
