I'm looking at buying a shotgun. I have the Mossberg Cruiser in mind. Only because I've shot one and I liked it. This gun will be for home protection and target practice. I would like it to be versitile. I found a Cruiser for $300 at my local gunshop. I may be able to get one cheaper, but I would rather keep my business here to thank them for their service to the community. But I have some questions about the gun that I haven't been able to answer after searching the net. So I thought I would ask them here:

  • If I buy the Cruiser can a regular stock be interchanged?

  • Can you interchange barrels on this model? longer barrel? if you can, can you use a barrel extender to get more in the magazine? I read something about a takedown screw that prohibits the use of extenders.

  • Do these shoot 2-3/4 and 3" or just 2-3/4? I found conflicting data.

  • To me it looks as if the Cruiser is just a Mossberg 500 Pump Action Persuader with a pistol grip and heat shield. Is this true?

Basically what I want is a shotgun where I can change between an 18" barrel to a longer barrel (haven't decided on the other length, I just want the option... you know, if I want to go skeet shooting or something like that... I just like my options open. :p ), and have the ability to have a pistol-grip stock and a regular stock. I really want the Hogue Overmolded stock and the Tamer pistol grip w/forend kit. The gun I shot had the Tamer pistol grip and it felt great.

Could I do this with a 590? Are there any real advantages to getting a 590 over a 500?

thanks for any info. This will be my first shotgun. :D

Most Cruisers come with the full buttstock included.
If they aren't offering the buttstock you will be paying way too much for that 500.
All 12 guage 500 buttstocks will fit on the cruiser as well as all 12 guage 500 barrels including any older 2 3/4" chambered barrels.
All 500 12 and 20 guage barrels are standard with a 3" chamber now.

CRUISER

I was looking at the Cruiser model at my gunshop and the price was pretty close to the same price and didn't come with a full stock. I decided for $200.00 that I could get the Maverick 88 with full stock and pistol grip included and accepts interchangeable barrels. I spent $25.00 on a Hogue Tamer psitol grip and have less than $250 in my whole gun. You lose a few rounds in capacity but for an inexpensive HD gun I feel that I am well armed. I know a few people who use them for local Combat Shotgun matches and they seem to hold up fine after alot of ammunition has been shot through them.

You can get a fullstock 500 Persuader for $250. They can interchange barrels, add rounds, etc.

The 590 is the military/police model, it's built a little stouter, all steel, etc (weighs more) but doesn't have interchangeable long hunting barrels.

so, lets say he can give me the 18.5" barrell 500 Persuader for less than the Cruiser. I could then buy a Hogue pistol grip and have the same gun (minus the heat shield)?

I went down to one of the other gun shops in town (I frequent two of them). They had a Mossberg 500A Persuader 12ga that came with the regular stock and a pistol grip stock and a 18.5" barrel. All for $269.99 new. Basically it comes with exactly what I want out of the box. From what we could tell (and my internet research) the only thing different between the two is the Cruiser only comes with the pistol grip only and it has a heat shield and ghost sights. So basically if I get the Persuader I won't get the heatshield or ghost sights.

are there any reasons I should have a ghost sight?

I don't ever plan on shooting slugs. Will I need the ghost rings?

Are there mag extenders for the Persuader? It's a 18.5" barrel and it looks like there is almost 3" between the end of the mag and the barrel.

Probably not then.

No, you can't extend the 500 magazine without putting on a new magazine tube, and the barrels fit the specific length of magazine tube, so you'd need a new one of those too. If you're just using it as a defensive shotgun, you might want to consider one of the 8 shot models. If you might want to put a longer (say 28") barrel for hunting, I think you'd have to stay with the 6 shot.

Cool. Looks like the Persuader is gonna be the gun I get.
I plan on buying the metal safety and aluminum trigger guard right off the bat.

Ok, time for a newb question. What is a high visibility non-binding follower? What do they do? When is one needed?

Like this one? I don't see much use for the high-viz part, and would wait to see if I actually had binding problems before considering taking off my mag tube to put one in. But that's just my opinion, someone else might know something better.

If you really want to spend some money on accessories, how about a nice Surefire forend? :)

Just bought the Mossy Persuader 500. Came with both regular stock and pg stock. Out the door with tax and background check and all that it was $315. Not to bad of a price for getting the two stocks I wanted.

and stupid california... when did they start making you wait 10 days for shotguns and long guns? ***? :banghead:

My Cruiser...

When I bought my Mossberg Cruiser at a Philly Gunshow back in the 90's, it didn't come with a full stock, just the pistol grip ( which can be swapped for a full stock in a minute ). I paid $180 NIB...it's my "bump in tha night" gun.

damn, that's a cheap ass price.

I probably could have waited for a gun show.... but this is actually a Christmas gift from my Mom. How cool is that!?!?!?!

I got a like new 20"/7 shot Cruiser from www.auctionarms.com for $150 and put a side folder and side saddle on it. It's worked flawlessly so far, I love it. I've since ditched the flashlight in the picture, it literally fell apart while I was shooting.

wow, nice price. Was that used or new?

lol, about the light.

Nice looking gun. I was personally looking for the 18.5" barrel. I know you get the longer mag tube with the 20, but I liked the 18.5" more.

5 more days on the 10 day wait. :D

It was used but looked new aside from a small scratch on the heat shield. Yeah, I got a good deal, the bad thing about buying online was that it was another $20 for shipping and another $15 for transfer. Still not bad for under $190. I was just going to keep it with the pistol grip but it would hurt my hand to shoot after a while so I got the folder.

lol. Tell me about it. I was shooting my Dad's Cruiser and my thumb was killing me the next day. Hence the reason I got the 500 Persuader... has both stocks. :)

If I could have found one used in decent shape, I woulda bought it that way too.

Mossberg 500, 590 etc.

All mossberg 500 & 590 series shotguns have aluminum alloy receivers and all are made on the same assembly line. Maverick 88 receivers are shipped to Mexico for final assembly. The 590 models do have metal trigger guards. The reloading question is easily answered with the Knoxx Sidewinder. Watch this video taken by Cavalry Arms to see how reloading a Mossberg shotgun should be done.

CaCrusin :)

I ended up getting the gun yesterday. So far I've taken off the buttstock and put on the pistol grip and taken the wooden dowl out.

Haven't got to go out and shoot it. Any technically since this is a Xmas present for me, I probably won't shoot it 'till after Xmas. :(

Might give me time to buy the Tamer grip.
