Mossberg model 46 opinions

I have a model 146 from the early 1950s which is an updated version of the 46. Mine shoots very well. All the .22 Mossbergs I have seen from just before WW2 to the late 1950s have been some of their best rifles. In the 1960s they seem to have started to cheapen their .22 rifles. The older ones are much better than what you get now days. If the price is right and its in good shape, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
One thing to look out for though is the trigger gaurd. The plastic formulas back then weren't very good and they tended to shrink with age. Most are in good shape though if the rifle has been stored and maintained properly. Replacements are also available from Havlin Sales.
Is your friends rifle a 46 or does it have any letters after the model number? If its just 46, it was made just before WW2 but if there are letters after the number, then it could have been made in the 1940s. The letters usually designate the type of sights, magazine, or stock the rifle came with.

Buy it! I have one and it is very accurate. I have a 6" gong on my 100 yd. target stand and with this rifle and open sights, I can easily hit it over and over firing offhand. Mine has one of the little selectible front sights. Magazine tube holds 19 or 20 rounds, adjustable trigger. Great Rifle.

Turns out it is a model 146B in very good condition. It has the original peep sights and leather sling. I sighted it in today. Nice adjustable trigger, full size tube feed. With cheap hollow points it shot from 3/8 to 1 1/4 inches at 25 yards from a tripod with rear support.
I did not get to a bench and did not get to shoot with target ammo but I am pretty pleased with it. One day I'll have to take it and my CZ 452 to the range and see how they compare. The only problem is the last round does't feed well. Could be the hollow points.
