I am looking for an accessory barrel for my 535. Problem is Mossberg only sells them in Mossyoak camo- no more blue barrels. Now, this may be a dumb question but I ask anyway: do the 500 series barrels fit 535s? There seem to be more barrel choices for the 500 series. I emailed Mossberg this question but they must be busy over there as I have not heard from them.

I need a slug barrel since firing rifled slugs out of the all-pupose choke tube is not a good idea. Am thinking of the smooth bore "security" barrel. This is for the bear problem we have here; anticipated range is less than 50 feet. So, a rifled barrel with sabots is not needed.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

The barrels are not interchangeable because the 535 has a slightly longer mag tube. However, you don't need a slug barrel. You can shoot rifled slugs through your existing IC or MOD constriction choke tube.

[strike]The 535s were made with overbored barrels - that's why Mossberg says not to shoot slugs in them.[/strike] Let me go find a reference...

Shows how well I keep up with Mossberg model numbers... I was thinking of the 835. And shows why I need to check my sources :D.

Can I shoot slugs or buckshot through a "smoothbore" field barrel with Accu-Choke™ tubes? (500/505/535/9200/88/930 models)

Yes, and with sabots or rifled slugs, the more "open" the choke tube, the better the accuracy ("Improved Cylinder" recommended.) The "full" or "modified" choke tubes are preferred for buckshot loads. Slugs, buckshot and steel shot loads are not recommended for use with an extra full "turkey tube" installed, due to the tube's tight constriction. Do not fire any load without a choke tube installed, doing so will damage the internal choke tube threads.

Can I fire slugs through my 935™ or 835® vent rib, Accu-Mag® choke tube barrel?

No, 935™ and 835® field barrels (those with a ventilated rib) are "overbored," and the extra inside diameter may cause the projectile to "wobble" producing unreliable accuracy. A projectile may wedge inside the barrel causing an obstruction. Obstructions of any kind can cause damage to the firearm resulting in damage to the barrel and/or personal injury to you or those around you. Dedicated fully rifled slug barrels are available for the 935™ and 835® models. Other 935™ and 835® Accu-Mag® choke tube notes: Buckshot and steel-shot loads are not recommended for use with an extra full turkey tube installed.

OK. So it appears that I have to use a rifled slug barrel since no cylinder bore barrel is made for this model. This means a cammo barrel on a blue received with wood stock and slide. That ought to be "Colorful".

More important is the next question:

Can rifled slugs be fired in a rifled barrel? I heard that the rifling on the slug interferes with the barrel's lands and grooves. Is this so? Am I limited to expensive sabot slugs?

You can fire rifled slugs through a rifled barrel or choke tube whether rifled or not. As Fred pointed out the 535 is not backbored and you can fire slugs though it all day long without worry using your existing barrel.

Blacksmoke, your factory barrel has screw in choke tubes. You don't need to change the bbl - you just need to change the choke tube.

Well, all I have are Full and Modified chokes. Modified should be ok. Ought to order an Improved choke just to be on the safe side. Only took me all friggin day to find the Mossberg choke key.

I do not use this shotgun very often.

Thanks for the advice.

one of my friends swears I cant shoot slugs through my Mossberg 500 because it has the threaded in choke tubes. he says the slugs will tear it up. In the manual it says you can shoot slugs with the IC choke. I wouldn't imagine lead would do damage to steel.
