I guess this doesn't fit well into any of the other categories, so in General it goes!

What's the best .22LR round to use with a gun that is known to suffer from Light-strikes with Walmart Federal and Remington Bulk Packs?

CCI Mini Mag?

None, take the gun to a gunsmith and have it repaired and eliminate the cause of the problem.

It is NOT light strikes, but narrow firing pins missing an incompletely primed rim that is the problem. In my experience, CCI has the most consistently primed ammo. I have a pistol with a narrow firing pin that misfired on Federal bulk packed Lightening about twice out of a 15 round mag. It eats CCI mini mag up.

This is one of the problems that is quite common with .22 LR and why I'd never carry one for self defense even if the round weren't so weak. .25ACP is far superior to .22LR for function in a small pistol.

I get one or two duds in about every 3,000 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity.

Skip the bulk packed stuff. The cheap cost just isn't worth the large number of duds.

The last case of CCI Standard Velocity I bought has been horrible. I get 4 or 5 duds per 100 pack. They usually fire the second time around, but I've been using them in competition, so it's been a real Pain In The A**!

I've determined it all depends on the gun and the width of the firing pin. My revolver NEVER duds on a Federal or anything else. That auto has a very narrow firing pin print on the rim. The revolver has a big, round firing pin that covers a lot of rim area. Really, that one firearm, a Ramline Exactor, is the one gun I have that duds a lot like that on Federal bulk pack. My other guns are pretty reliable with it, only a rare problem and never a problem with that revolver.

Another thing, when I first started carrying my NAA mini revolver, I had it loaded for about a year once, pulled it out to fire the rounds in it and it refused to fire four of 'em. Heat, moisture, the elements are not kind to rimfire ammo and now days I regularly replace the ammo in that little revolver which I always have on me and haven't had that problem since. That little gun is also pretty reliable with Federal bulk pack. If one does dud on a revolver, all you have to do is cock it (or pull the trigger on a DA) to solve the problem. No tap/rack/bang necessary. Of course, .22 isn't really a self defense cartridge, but I do have that little mini revolver on me all day every day as a back up if nothing else. I always have a larger caliber gun on me, though, too.

i've gotten quite a few duds with the bulk pack remington stuff. had a little pile of them sitting on the corner of the desk and got a bit bored one day so i used a pair of pliars to pull the lead out. not a single one of them had any powder.

I chrono'd some Rem Thunderbolts out of my P-22 and had over 300 fps spread on velocity( low 900 fps to mid 600 fps). You can even hear the difference in the sound of the cartridge. What is really strange is that even when the velocity gets down in the 700fps range the gun feeds and ejects the Thunderbolts! If I try CCI or Winchester std velocity ammo which consistantly runs Low 900fps to high800fps ( about a 30 fps range) it fails to feed and eject. Go figure

MC, maybe it would pay to seal the bullet to the brass with some nail polish. You sure the gun didn't get gunked up and light strike?

That's just great news. Several yrs ago I was having trouble with the Rem Goldens, when I pulled bullets they all had powder, just no primer material in the rim where the pin hit it.

Virtually all the misfires I have expereinced with RF ammo would fire if you rotated the ammo and tried it again.

I can only remember maybe one or two cases where I suspected no primer at all because I rotated the cases and re-shot them at multiple locations and they never did go off. I think the majority were cases with no gaps in the primer material.

The cheap promo ammo you see seems to have the most issues.

I bought some remington target back in the mid 80s (some = 5 cases) that I only recently finished shooting up. I had very few misfires.

I tried some newly made stuff in the same plastic box and had a misfire in the first mag, but IIRC, none in the rest of the box.

I have tried several boxes of Wolf and while it smells bad, it shoots good.

CCI Mini Mag?

Definitely not. CCI, while good quality RF ammo, is known for having very thick/hard rims. I have had older guns that would shoot Federal and others with no problems, but would get many failures using CCI.

If your gun won't ignite Federal and Remington stuff, you'd better have it looked at.

Update and referencing an old post of mine about how guns know when they're about to be sold:

Tried out the CCI Mini-Mags today and everything ran perfectly after about 50 rounds or so. No light strikes whatsoever.

Feeling a bit curious, I tried out the Walmart Federal bulk pack again and that ran fine too after another 50 rounds or so.

I would've shot more, but the wife was getting tired. I guess I'll have to keep this for awhile.
