I had one of those given to me probably 15 years ago. The guy who had it didn't know much about black powder shooting and decided rather than clean it he would fill the barrel with water and store it that way, his idea being that if no air got to the bore it wouldn't rust. yeah right! "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"I said to myself. When he wanted to shoot it he would dry the barrel and got to the range and then complain about how poor his groups were. He got tired of it and gave it to me. It was and still a good looking gun. i cleaned the barrel the best I knew how. Never was a tack driver but shot pretty well out to about 75 yards, around three inches. I have harvested more deer with this rifle than all the rest of my rifles put together, smokeless included.

I am now in the process of replacing the old barrel a green mnt barrel 1 in 70 twist, just waiting for barrel lugs and front and rear sights. It is a wonderful gun, you should be pleased.

htr thanks for the info on the rifle. I am not too worried about this one the guy that I got it from is a bigger freak on cleaning his weapons than I am. Last time I saw this rifle was about two years ago in his safe and looked like it had nevert been fired. Witrh tiger Maple Stock.
That is one gun I can not wait to get back to the states to shoot this one. Can you give me any pointers in loads balls patches etc.......

Thanks
Gary

as far as balls go just use the .490 RB. You will have to play around with the patch thickness to see which one your gun likes the best.

Pancho, not sure of the twist but if memory serves me right. It is for Patch Round Ball. I do not have a way right now to find out.

htr, Thanks for the info in round balls, I will figure the patch out when I can get home. How about powder and charges?

As powder goes I generally use 60 grns. FFG for target and up it to 70-75 for hunting.

What do you mean you have no way to find out? Use the ram rod!

Add a patch jag and a patch.

Run the rod in all the way and then wrap masking tape on it at the muzzel. Mark a dot, and see if you can watch closely enough to see if the dot makes a full turn, parts of a turn and maybe more than a turn.

If it is 1 in 66, you should have 1/2 in 33.

Mac I will try that in June when my deployment is over. this rifle has come into my possesion while I am over seas. So it is in the safe in AL.

But that is a trick I did not know

htr thanks for the info on loads.
