I have a model 721 with a 4X Leupold that my father gave me over 30 years ago. It is a great gun, but my eyes are suffering from my age, so I bought a new Leupold VX-II 4-12x40mm A.O. I found that the tube length on the new scope is shorter than the old 4X, so the new scope won't fit the existing mount/ring combo.

My concern is that a new set of mounts and rings may have the same problem. Just because the mounts fit the gun doesn't mean they will be close enough together to fit the scope.

The Leupold site doesn't help much. It says that the low bases will work most of the time and the medium bases will work almost all of the time. The gun still has its iron sights on it, so I doubt low bases will work without removing the rear sight. But, removing the sight is not so much an issue as whether or not the rings will be close enough together for the new scope to fit.

Would reversible mounts help? I was just going to use Leupold standard medium bases and rings. Any suggestions?

Other pertinent information:
The 4X scope was set in Weaver detachable rings and #35 & #36 bases. When mounted on the rifle, the rings are 5 7/16" apart, from outside to outside.

The new scope tube is 5 3/16" from the power ring to the bell on the objective end of the scope.

Will reversible bases give me an extra 1/2"? Would both bases need to be reversible?

Thanks a bunch,
Clint
