We’re thinking of moving to Maryland. What am I going to run into as a gun owner/collector, NRA instructor and Florida concealed weapon permit holder? How tough is it to get a CWP in Maryland? The other option is Virginia but I’m leaning toward one of the small towns on the Eastern Shore of MD.

It is near impossible to get a carry permit in MD right now. There's several court challenges that look promising to change that in perhaps a year or so.

You may OWN magazines of any capacity, but you cannot SELL, TRADE or OFFER FOR SALE and magazine with a capacity of greater than 20 rounds.

Almost any rifle is fine to own here.

You can bring any handgun you like except for those deemed, "Assault pistols" such as Tec-9's and the like.
Here's a list:

An assault pistol is defined as any of the following specified firearms or their copies regardless of which company produced and manufactured the firearm:
AA Arms AP-9 semi-automatics
Bushmaster semi-automatic pistol;
Claridge HI-TEC, semi-automatic pistol;
D Max Industries semi-automatic pistol;
Encom MK-IV, MP-9, MP-45 semi-automatic pistols;
Heckler and Koch semi-automatic pistol SP-89;
Holmes MP-83 semi-automatic pistol;
Ingram MAC 10/11 semi-automatic pistol and any variation including the Partisan Avenger and the SWD Cobray;
Intratec TEC-9/DC-9 in any centerfire variation;
P.A.W.S. type semi-automatic pistol;
Skorpion semi-automatic pistol;
Spectre double action semi-automatic pistol (Sile, F.I.E., Mitchell);
UZI semi-automatic pistol;
Weaver Arms semi-automatic Nighthawk pistol; and
Wilkinson semi-automatic "Linda" pistol.

Full auto and suppressors are welcomed with open arms.

Here's a good site for you....it's sort of a "worst case scenario" with some of the info being based on overly strict interpretations of the law.

MD vs VA

Also tax rate is lower in VA then in MD. Car insurance is usually lower in MD then in VA.

You can get the a carry permit in MD if you know the right pols and judges. Judges in MD are elected I believe.

Go a little further south on the Eastern Shore into VA. Have you checked real estate prices? Do you lean more red or blue in your political views? The closer to violet or blue the happier you will be in MD.

Also look at the Northern Neck in VA

Why?

As a life long Maryland resident, I'd like to move out of this Peoples Republik, but I'm too darn old to start over in a place where I don't know anyone. If it wasn't for all my family here, as well as friends, I'd leave. If I were someplace else, I sure wouldn't come here if you value any firearms freedoms. Forget about a carry permit. Unless you have a first line blood relative in the state house up in Annapolis, forget about carrying.

And the taxes will kill ya. We're probably paying thousands to your hundreds down there in Fla.

Move to Maryland? I'd suggest professional counciling. This ain't the same state I grew up in!

Carl.

If you are at all into gun rights, or any rights for that matter go to VA NOT MD. If you are set on the Eastern Shore, stay in the VA part of it. Seriously.

Regarding guns, Maryland is not as bad as California, Illinois, or New Jersey. (For one thing, it's NFA-weapon friendly.) But no carry permits (for all practical purposes) and no reciprocity. The political climate is such that there could be new restrictions at any time. Gun-wise, the comparison with neighboring Virginia is like night and day.

Stay out. Mandatory fired casings to the MSP (like that accomplishes anything but a PITA) and a approved gun list. The really bad thing about MD is you really might need to carry there but cant. 28 years there and cringe when I have to go back.

I'm in the People's Republic now, Comrade! I had guns in Virginia, but I sold them before I came to Maryland for college. Everyone here knows that they are safe, because the Police tell us that we are!

I grew up in Maryland and moved to WV just two years ago.

Maryland is not as bad as some other states. The fired casing for handguns is only needed for new handguns. Used handguns are exempt.

High cap mags are allowed to be owned, but not sold or purchased in MD.

Assualt rifles are allowed to be owned, abd baught. The rule for these are if you are a civilian with no Law enforcment or Military experience you have to watch a video and then wait the 7 day cool down period.

Handguns require a 7 day wait period before picking up.

To answere your question about concealed permits........good luck. I know of retired Correctional officers who have both been granted and denied for permits. Some of the requirements for a permit include
1.) having several documented threats against your life.
2.) transporting large sums of money.
3.) Private detective.

I would suggest looking at any of the surrounding states. Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. All have much better gun laws and are shall issue states.

I got the heck out of MD years ago and it sucks, because aside from the ignorants who run it, I like the state, I miss it, its where I was born & raised.

The central Baltimore/Washington/Annapolis strip running north and south parallel to and west of the Chesapeake Bay is usually your non-gun friendly zone. Stay west or east of that and people tend to have more sense.

The cops, well the law is the law regardless of which side of the bay your on, regardless of its legitimacy.

I lived in MD just outside of DC and I did carry, not legally. I moved to VA after 2yrs in MD to Prince William Co., VA and never looked back.

I read somewhere (maybe here on THR) that MD passed a law requiring police departments to report on SWAT usage, and the results show that it's way out of control. I suppose this is mostly around Baltimore, but I don't actually know. There were lots of examples of sending SWAT teams for non-violent offenders, and for basically administrative purposes.

IMHO, MD gets credit for requiring the reporting. The same thing could be happening elsewhere, and no one knows. On the other hand, violence begets violence.

Guns in Maryland.... it depends on your interests. You can own guns, just not all guns in Maryland. I would take Maryland over NJ however, but would probably try to be in VA if possible.

"I read somewhere (maybe here on THR) that MD passed a law requiring police departments to report on SWAT usage, and the results show that it's way out of control."

They raided a small town mayors house after allowing a box of pot t be dropped off.

Killed his two labs (one was running away) and held the mayor and his MIL at gunpoint for hours.

It turned into a horrible stink, but the police still do not admit they did anything wrong (they were from the county).

It turned out the delivery driver was in on the thing, and was dropping packages of drugs off, then returning to retrieve them.
This box was taken into the house by the resident not knowing what it was.

As the other posters have mentioned, Virginia is a much better choice if practical. It isn't for me due to my job (the VA border is a 45 min drive away). It's not just 2nd Amendment rights, it's also an insanely high tax rate (state + local income tax runs about 8%, plus a 6% sales tax, plus property taxes) and cost of living.

I live in Virginia and have turned down jobs in Maryland to avoid there restrictive laws.

Notice something missing on that list? Are any of those AK pistols? If you move to Md, bring a couple Dracos with you just for laughs.
