Moving and Gun stuff

Last time I moved was 11 years ago. I figured out how to move the guns and ammo cross country. The one gun related item I could never find was a box of 45ACP bullets for reloading. It’s a mystery.

I moved south in the late 70s, move provided by employer. A beautiful Ithaca 37 and equally nice 03-A3 never made it. I was reimbursed but I’d rather I had the guns. Called FBI, very nice agent explained that even though moving company was fairly sure who had the guns it wasn’t a big enough crime for them to act. Frustrating.

So you know what it like to have moving boxes from 3-4 moves ago and not sure what in those boxes…
tip… Goodwill, don’t open it, you didn’t need it, Goodwill, tax credit
Not really. My dad was the you won't need this type of guy.
Family heirlooms and firearms was all that was safe from the chopping block.
I have about 10 20mm cans, and 6 81mm mortar cans to unpack yet.
My casting equipment is organized and my reloading is organized minus some of case trim stuff.
My gunsmith stuff is a jumbled mess.

For you that have moved. How long did it take you to find all your gun stuff?
Mine was boxed up and moved in multiple trips. It's been 2 months and I'm still randomly finding stuff and looking for other stuff.
A positive was I found a brick of SRP, LRPM and about 500 CCI #11.
I also found ammo cans of bullets I forgot about and other random gun stuff.

4 years!!! My wife and I had to move in order to take care of my mom while she was in hospice (she wanted to stay in her own home with family... Hardest job I ever loved) She passed right before covid hit... God bless her... My entire family contracted covid... Everything going on seems to have deleted some RAM or hardrive space in my head... I still can't find everything... On a lighter note I just use it has an excuse to get the latest and greates stuff I "tell myself" I'm missing....or needing....so that's good.

cooflu fog was a thing! same situation here!

I've never moved my stuff from one residence to another, but still can't find things, cause some is here, and some is there, and some is in one of those tubs over there, or maybe it is in the garage with my other tools and stuff, no - I'm sure it was over there, but now it isn't.

I have moved twice first in 2011 second in 2017. I told the wife the next time I move it will be in an Urn!
Most of my gun stuff made it some got stolen in my storage unit, (1,000 6mmHP arbor press powder measure plus).
Boxes marked kitchen were stolen.
I did not lose any ammo as I unloaded it and covered the ammo cans with boxes of books. the guns were at my brother's house until I got a safe.
I think the break in was an inside job, the guy who helped me unload, owned the storage units across the street,
So he saw every thing that went into the units, two were side by side and one across the way all three were broken into!

Have you checked the dresser drawers in your bedroom?;) The last time we moved (over 40 years ago), we couldn't find our coffee pot for a week. So, I asked some of the guys at work (who had helped us move) if they knew where it was. One guy said, "Sure, I put it in one of your dresser drawers." It was still there. :D

I just moved across country for the 6th time. I have moved 13 times in my adult life. Each time I move I think I have finally dialed in a method where it doesn’t take me a couple of months to find all my stuff and each time I realize I didn’t quite succeed. Moving is just a pain in the rear and it never quite goes as planned.

I apparently need to rescue some kind of cabinet from the trash, too.
I just took some stuff to the local place that takes building project donations, the proceeds and some of the donated items go towards building homes for veterans. Anyway, they had a bazillion cabinets for way cheap. Some salvage, many new in the box

When I last moved I put labels on every box. Not necessarily contents but “shop” “garage” “kitchen” etc. It was easy enough to find all my ammo and gun stuff because the labels worked. My wife labeled things additionally that were most necessary (kids clothes, cooking utensils, etc) so we were effectively up and running in the new place the very same day.

The guns themselves (except for a couple for carry/home defense) I took to my family’s place out in the boondocks, when we got serious about selling, and went and got them all a few months later, when we’d been in the new house for a couple of weeks. I didn’t want a lot of guns in the very small house when realtors, tradesmen, and random potential buyers were in and out constantly. It also eliminated any chance they’d get damaged in a “gotta get all this stuff in this truck TODAY” scenario, as so often happens when crunch time hits.

When I last moved, all guns went in my car. Not saying I didn't trust the movers, but I didn't trust the movers.

Ammo went in smaller boxes marked "books". One mover said "what do 'ya got lead in here?"

When it comes to my guns and all of their ancillary bits and pieces and I'm exactly the same way. I don't trust any movers to handle them. Nothing personal against them, I'm sure they're all nice, trustworthy people, but you never know who they talk to in the course of their jobs or in their daily lives.

When I move guns, knives, and other sundry items go in plastic totes. Ammo, reloading equipment, and supplies go into heavy duty cardboard boxes (usually marked "Books" or "Accts. Receivable/Accts. Paid") and I move all of them by myself and always when there's no one else around. I just open the garage doors, back my SUV in, close the garage doors, and unload all of my "stuff". My SUV can hold a lot of boxes and it usually takes around 4 or more trips to the new house to get it all over there and moved down into the basement.

Last time I moved(march 1 2020) there was quite a bit going on in my state. We didn't exactly PLAN on moving so we didn't have anything packed, and my wife was recovering from brain surgery. We just kind of put the majority of our stuff in trash bags and had friends help unload it and put it away. My firearm stuff was one load entirely and I moved it all by myself and put it exactly where I wanted it. Didnt have to look for a single thing. That being said...next time will require some considerable planning.

After moving, you will never find all of your stuff.

1950s: 6 moves
1960s: 3 moves
1970s: 8 moves
1980s: 0 moves
1990s: 2 moves
2000s: 1 move
2010s: 3 moves
2020s: 0 moves

Oh, by the way, this does not count the many MANY times my boss told me I was moving my office to a different building, or my secretary decided to quit so she could "find herself". . .

When I moved from Fla to Ind I packed all my "gun stuff" myself and kept it separate.
I transported it myself in my POV.
That way, I knew where it was.
