i might be moving from atlanta ga to san diego and i was wondering if i will have a hard time getting my CCW permit there in San Diego.
In atlanta it was pretty easy,..also i have a glock 19 i just bought here and i was wondering if bringing that to California is legal since it has two 15 round magazines.

Thank you in advance
this has been bugging me

david, over 10 shot mags are forbidden in the 'Golden State'.
Being an ex-resident of the this once wonderful paradise,I suggest to prepare for the worst.
Getting yout CCW depends on the Sheriff of San Diego County and his feelings toward concealed carry and the little folks right to defend themselves.Unlike Georgia which is a shall issue state.
It may come down to whether he had a bad pizza or too many chili peppers the day you apply.
Here's an application form to study.
Best of luck:

The 15 round magazines are not legal to bring into the state. Bringing the 15 round magazines with you is a major offense.

The handgun itself is legal to bring, but you will need to get magazines that can only hold 10 rounds to continue to use it.

You will also need to pay for the privelidge of registering your handguns within 60 days of moving in.
They will then enter a database that will constantly be cross referenced against new prohibited persons.

Complete and submit a NEW RESIDENT HANDGUN OWNERSHIP REPORT form along with $19.00 to the Department of Justice, one for each seperate handgun.
http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/ab991frm.pdf

If you have police contacts they will be aware of any pistols registered to you, as that is added to thier computers.
If you run afoul of any of a number of misdemanors or any felonies, or are added to the mental unfit list any time in the future the database will red flag you as someone in possession that shouldn't be.
You may wish to research the prohibiting misdemeanors, they include simple assault or battery for example. If you even get in someone's face, shake your fist, or otherwise intimidate someone (an assault) it is a 10 year RKBA suspension in the state by law for example.

Welcome to CA.

A CCW permit will be much more of a pain to aquire, it can be done, but it is entirely discretionary.
I would not expect to aquire one new and just moving into that area unless you have some special needs.

San Diego CCW includes at two seperate interviews to be considered, they must be during the hours most people work during weekdays, include 3 local residents not related to you that think you should be allowed to carry a loaded firearm, and are willing to put themselves on record stating that with contact information:

Appointments may be set between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00, Monday through Friday. You will need to allow an hour for the interview. You will be given additional information and instructions to bring with you for your second interview.

"All new applicants must demonstrate they are residents of San Diego County, have good cause and good moral character, pursuant to PC 12050. For purposes of this application, applicants must submit proof of residency in the form of two current, unpaid utility bills that list their name, service address and mailing address (or other similar type proof). Three character reference letters are required to assist in substantiating good moral character. These letters must be written by local residents and contain a local address and phone number. Letters will not be accepted from any relatives. The writer must also acknowledge he or she understands the letter is for an application for a concealed weapons license.

Good cause is an individual issue; however, if applying for business purposes, proof that you are a legitimate and fully credentialed business will be required as well as having to demonstrate that good cause for carrying a firearm exist. The same applies for those wanting to apply strictly for personal protection; the required documentation will be discussed at the time of the initial first interview, additional documentation may be requested. Valid California identification is also required."

david, after Zoogster's very informative seminar are you now convinced that remaining in the Peach State is your best option?
Of course there is La Jolla,Coronado,Balboa Park and the worlds finest Zoo as inticements.
Also Catalina Island to the northwest,Tijuana to the south and Alpine in the mountains to the east.
Firearms are not everything and I love California.
It's a tough call.

I've travelled to CA quite a bit on business, and had the opportunity to talk w/a fellow gun owner there. According to him, you're MUCH more likely to get a CA CCW if you live in a rural area - if you live in an urban area, the odds are you won't be issued one without a REALLY good reason (i.e., you drive an armored cash truck for Brinks Security).

Like you, I've considered moving to CA. I work for a CA-based company and would have infinitely better career ops there. I used to minimize the ultra-strict gun laws there, thinking that Californians are generally more peacefull people...until I was chased by a road-raging driver intent on doing me bodily harm (I've never been chased before in my life). I out-maneuvered him in the end, but the whole incident certainly made me think twice about putting myself under a government intent on stripping me of my right to self-defense. Add to that, the whole gun registration requirement - history has shown that registration precedes confiscation - and I've decided that CA isn't for me. I'm not sure what kind of a choice you'll have in your move, but I'd think seriously about moving to California. I mean, here in GA we have great organizations like GCO who have made great strides towards making GA a law-abiding gun owners' paridise...

I've always wanted to visit California. It seems to have an ideal climate, with interesting mountains, and wetlands, and deserts, and good farm land too.

What deters me from going there are the multitude of evil crazy laws they have there, and some of the evil crazy inhabitants.

Yah, I know, evil crazy people are everywhere, but they do tend to clump in certain places. I live in Florida, so I know this. Our evil crazy people are incompetent compared to the Cali variety, so they haven't yet taken over the government here.

CCW in San Diego

Hi David, if you move to San Diego be sure you get a lottery ticket every week. You will stand a lot better chance of winning millions than you will getting your CCW. After you win your millions and run for mayor they will probably let you have a CCW. That being said, I used to live in Vista 35 miles from San Diego and I had a CCW. I got it under the last sheriff. The current sheriff would not have let me have it. I still make a trip to San Diego about 3 times a year. There are a lot of gun people there and I don’t know how things have gotten the way they are. I go to an indoor range in Oceanside or one in San Diego almost every time I make the trip. I shoot with a different group of people at each range. I hate taking my gun off and putting it away at the state line, but I do. I don’t need the problems I could have if I did not. San Diego is a great place. I love to ride my bike around the bay and along the beach.

Good luck
Willis
