Hi guys, I am possibly moving to Portland, Oregon for a new job from Texas and I've Google'd a little bit on the gun laws but I wanted to know a few things.

1) Can I legally drive my handgun against state lines? (I will be driving to Oregon from Texas)

2) Must my handgun be registered? I currently don't have it registered under my name in Texas

3) Is there a Castle Law doctrine in Oregon? Or any equivalent? How are the gun laws in this state?

I'd appreciate any general information or advice I can get.

Man, it must be a really awesome opportunity to voluntarily move from TX to OR. I wish I could help. I'm sure OR has this information posted on their official State Website like TX does on the DPS site.

I took a quick look at handgunlaw.us and opencarry.org and it seems like Oregon is generally more gun friendly than Texas. Texas has always struck me as being rather ridiculous when it comes to their pickiness about concealing the gun. People are often surprised to learn that places like Ohio and Pennsylvania have simpler, more firearm friendly regs than Texas.

Texas has a lot of places you can't legally carry a handgun. It is not as gun friendly as the media makes it out to be. You can carry in schools in Oregon with a license, can't do that in Texas.

It rains here, the beer is not Shiner Bock, there are no fire ants and the women have beards...stay away!:D

That said, concealed carry permits are pretty easy to get and te are some great ranges just south of Portland.

As for the drive, just stay away from Ca. and case your gun once you get into Oregon you'll be fine.

From that site:
I am planning a vacation in Oregon and would like to find out the validity of my concealed pistol permit, as well as any regulations for carrying my pistol.
Oregon does not recognize other states concealed weapons permit/license. Carrying a concealed weapon in Oregon is considered a Class A Misdemeanor as unlawful possession of a firearm. According to ORS 166.250 "(1) Except as otherwise provided in this section or ORS 166.260; 166.270, 166.274, 166.291, 166.292 or 166.410 to 166.470, a person commits the crime of unlawful possession of a firearm if the person knowingly: a. Carries any firearm concealed upon the person b. Possesses a handgun that is concealed and readily accessible to the person within any vehicle We suggest that firearm(s) be placed in a storage container in the trunk of the vehicle or a locked storage area in a motor home. If pulled over, a person needs to make sure to notify the police that a weapon is stored in a locked compartment of the vehicle.

I am a retired police officer and plan to travel in Oregon. What are the requirements to carry concealed?
Carrying a concealed weapon in Oregon is considered a Class A Misdemeanor as unlawful possession of a firearm. According to ORS 166.250 "(1) Except as otherwise provided in this section or ORS 166.260; 166.270, 166.274, 166.291, 166.292 or 166.410 to 166.470, a person commits the crime of unlawful possession of a firearm if the person knowingly: However, 166.260 Persons not affected by ORS 166.250 gives us the exceptions to that rule, the main one being: "(1) ORS 166.250 does not apply to or affect: (a) Sheriffs, constables, marshals, police officers, whether active or honorably retired, parole and probation officers or other duly appointed peace officers."

I am a Washington resident who has recently obtained a concealed weapons permit issued by the State of Washington. Is my permit valid to carry a concealed weapon while in the State of Oregon? If not, can a non-Oregon resident apply for a permit?
Oregon does not recognize concealed weapons permits from any other state. If you wish to review the law you can go to: http://www.leg.state.or.us/ors/166.html and read 166.291. As you can see from ORS 166.291(8) which says "The county sheriff may waive the residency requirement in subsection (1)(c) of this section for a resident of a contiguous state who has a compelling business interest or other legitimate demonstrated need," the sheriff of each county has some discretion for a resident of a contiguous state. You would need to check with the sheriffs to see what their requirements are.

Portland is the worst part of the state when it comes to guns. There has been a movement in the past to get handguns banned throughout Portland. I don't think it went through but it shows the sentiment toward guns and gun owners. Open carry will invite trouble. I only conceal carried while there.

Having lived in both and having relatives moving to and fro - both states are different but both are fine places to live.

Both states are full of folks who think their state is the ONLY one.

You can have fun in both.
