I will be moving to Nevada soon and starting to pack things up. I have about 10 lbs of powder, around 6K of primers several lbs. of Black and 1000 percussion caps. Any suggestions on the safest way pack these things so I don't have any surprises on the interstate? I'm planning on loading everything into 4x4x4 pallet crates so I can forklift them onto my flatbed for the trip out. I will be making one trip with the flatbed but several other trips with horse trailers so I could separate things if need be.

Ammo boxes would work great for your primers and caps and an old ice chest could work for your powders. Obviously keeping everything separated and away from a risky place on the pallet would be a good idea too. Plastic totes for everything else.

New Job?

Definitely a protective thick walled box or ammo can for the primers. Wouldn’t want a rock or other road debris hitting a brick of primers. As for the powder, when I moved from California to Arizona, I just loaded the powder containers into a cardboard box in the back of my pick-up.

I do believe the several pounds of black powder will require DOT Haz-Mat placards on the trailer.

Anyway, it would only be prudent, just to warn first responders in case there is an accident and/or trailer fire.

The last time I moved, I used a large cardboard box for all my primers and powder. I used bits of foam and cardboard to snug everything up (the box was also inside my pickup). I didn't haul any black powder though and RC made a good point.

A few things you should consider:

1 - On some bridges/tunnels/ and even some downtown it is prohibited to transport explosives or explosives materials. My friend found the latest one the hard way when he went with his RV downtown a town I do not recall the name and the cops stop him because of the propane gas tank outside.

2 - I would use the same type of packaging that was used to ship the powder/primers: original container inside a card box and inside another card box.

3 - I would mark with a sharpie the box with the content on all sides.

Kestak, the first town that comes to mind about bottles in a tunnel is Baltimore. There was no excuse because of the warnings.

Hauling powder, there is a limit on weight, Part's reloading in Ohio would be a good recourse person, I believe the weight limit for an approved box is 48 pounds. I do not believe it is legal to have more than one box as in two boxes with 48 pounds each.
