Moving to Houston. Need help finding Local Ranges and competitions

OP: I lived in Houston for 8 years, in Jersey Village.

There is Shiloh shooting center, but quite honestly it sucks. The staff are all 17yo kids and target changes take forever. It is however, the closest range to you.

That's Hot Wells. Shiloh is an indoor facility near Willowbrook Mall. I'm sure your memories of the names of the places have faded a bit. ;)

Harris County Toll Road Authority "EZ Tag" office on the West Sam Houston Tollway and get yourself one of the toll tags

You can do it all online now-a-days..

well the employees could have aged a bit, but most Shiloh's employees are fairly young 20 somethings.. :scrutiny:

True, but the target changes at Shiloh are done by the shooter since it is an indoor range with a motorized cable system.

Hot Wells is an outdoor range and their policy is for their range attendants to change the targets for you during cease fires. The range attendants look to be high school or college age. They are good guys, but are still new to it compared to some range officers at other ranges.

None of my business but is there a reason you want to live in JV?

My ex wife moved down there took my daughter. So I am moving there to be closer to her. JV is where they live and my ex found me a nice house there to rent for a good price.

This is all great info guys. I really appreciate it. Since I have never been there and don't know anyone except my ex and my daughter, I am pretty much just trying to figure out how to keep up on my love of shooting and competing.

I am a member of Bayou Rifles which has two ranges. The larger of the two has ranges for shotgun, pistol and rifles out to 1000 yards. They host a lot of monthly competitions and fun shoots that are open to non-members. We open the membership wait list every year. This year it will be open on the 3rd of April at 9:00 pm, your time. I highly recommend that you get on the list if you have any interest at all. You can always elect not to join if you want when your name comes up. Last year the 250 waiting list spots filled up in about 30 minutes so don't wait too long past 9:00 pm. :) Go to bayourifles.org if you are interested or want to learn more.

I will definitely be registering at bayou on 4/3 at 8pm central time, I'll be in the car driving down at that time. So ill be pulling over to register, lol. Have the page bookmarked and everything

When you get settled in PM me and I would be happy to take you to the range so that you can check it out... and shoot, of course.

Hot wells is a bit of a laugh sometimes...not sure if she is still there but there was some gal that worked there that ran around bare-foot. :D

I am on the far north side in a town called Willis...there is a place on FM1314 called Thunder gun range.

what I would also suggest is what I did...find some folks that have a decently close deer lease and hook up with them. Get on the lease and generally (at least in my case) you can go out and shoot ALMOST year round...you get close to The Season and then you have to dial it back and take care of the herd.

Years and years ago I was a range hand at ASC...and I can attest that its a nice place...but when The Season comes up you will see some seriously funny stuff...I still remember one guy grabbing all the sand bags and literally setting up a damn prepared fire position...I wanted to ask him if he though the deer shoot back...

And if you EVER want to know why range hands are hard-a$$es sometimes...just look up at the roof of where you are shooting...and count the holes. :scrutiny:

And WELCOME TO TEXAS :)

Yep, I remember her, I think her name was Cheryl. She passed from cancer many years ago. She was the lead instructor for my first CHL class in 2008.

Shiloh is where I got my renewal CHL a couple years back.

Hot Wells changed a whole lot after Cheryl passed.

Great, have fun shopping for a range and getting to know the neighborhood!

Have you started slowing down your speech patterns/delivery, yet? ;)

started slowing down your speech

LoL.
When it's 80º by 0800 (after a night time low of only 78-79º) at 98%RH, a body just can't push the air fast enough to support fast talkin'. Come July, when it gets to be 95º at 1500 and the land breeze has dropped the humidity to only 60-65%, you have to speak slowly just to not burn your lungs.

Houston can be an odd place, from as far away, as, say, Waco, it's all Houston; get closer, and everyone specifies which neighborhood/city area they are from instead. Learning them all can seem daunting. As will learning the "names" of all the roads. It says "I-45" on the map, but th signage says "northeast freeway" or "Gulf Freeway" depending upon which side of town you are on. Ok, so, 610, 290, and 59 are exceptions to this (mostly).

Used to be a swanky range/gun club in Conroe, but I do not know if it repoened after it closed in the late 90s. There was a decent service rife range out in Alvin Appleseed still shoots out near there, IIRC. There was a rather ramshackle range out on 45 across from the old TI plant. I have a memory that they used a fifteen minute timer on the pistol lines: 15 hot and 15 cold. But, that memory is from around 1986 or so.

Oh, and if you get a chance, drive out west on 290 to Hempstead where the blueebonnets are in bloom. Go a bit further and see Chappell Hill. There's a good BBQ joint--Art's--in Waller on the way back.

oh i forgot to mention Impact Zone out on the west side. There is a group, West Side Shooters, that utilizes the range for IDPA on Wed. nights and Sats.

Hey Zerobarrier,

I hope you had luck signing up for Bayou Rifles. I hope to see you there sometime.

Thanks to everyone, I made the signup. Time to wait to see about membership.

Thanks to all

Of course I missed the sign up. I got down here earlier than expected and it was a mess. So many things went wrong and during the mess I forgot. Enrollment is now closed :( I'll just have to keep my eye on it until it opens up again

I had two friends get in this year. They have already done their orientation are are waiting for their cards. The Addicks range is totally flooded at the moment. :(

zerobarrier, PM me when you get settled and are ready to go shooting.

No problem master. Still getting situated with the new job, place, and women... boy the women down here are awesome!!!

I live just past JV on 290. As others have mentioned Hot Wells sucks. I use ASC quite a bit, pistols from 3-50 yards, rifles from 50-600 yards. You have to qualify to shoot on the 300-600 but it's pretty simple, just follow simple safety rules.
