Wonderful Wife gawked in disbelief. She asked,"How many of those things do you need"?

Quoth I,"As many as we can afford".....

As some of you know, Casa McC has 6 870s gracing it at the moment, shortly 7 if friend anapex is serious about selling his 870TC. Mine are set up for everything from WWIV to trap. But, they're all 870s.

I know Lee Lapin has a number of 870s, and some folks have mentioned having a number of Model 12s and so on. sm has some X1s and OkieCruffler has not quite all of the 311s yet.

How prevalent is this? How many of us like having duplicates and variations?

I like the commonality of controls and the vaunted reliability of the 870 system.

Others may wax rhapsodic about 1100s or A-5s. Or Citoris, for that matter.

Tom Held, OTOH, seems to own just one fine example of every GOOD shotgun made since 1900. Just one.

Anyway, what's your multiples and why?....

Dave , be careful putting me in anything you write - I ain't that smart and wouldn't want to hurt your credibility.

I was taught redundancy at an early age, be it shotguns, handguns, rifles, or the Coleman Lantern.

Many reasons:

-Find what fits you and stick with it. Once found don't go around "fixing what ain't broke". Beware the man that shoots one gun - he knows how to use it

-We didn't have money to go buy all sorts of stuff, not to mention the variety is not that we have today. So one bought Back-Up guns that matched what they had. Ammo, holsters, speedloaders, 1911 mags, BHP mags...whatever -all interchanged with each other.

-We were doing Civil Defense Drills back then, we kept guns off-site in the event we needed to evacuate. So the "Lesson of 4" I guess is what we subscribed to - granted we didn't know it had a name until many years later.

One gun to carry / use. One for backup , One in case one of the first two needed repair, was kept by the po-po because it was used in a shooting, lost stolen or somesuch, and the Fourth off site in case of evac, or whatever.

-Understand as well back then we knew our neighbors, and families often lived close. Having the same guns, ammo and familiarity - just made good sense. Folks grew up learning to shoot. Encouraged and practiced often.

Seriously - I don't have multiples anymore. I lost a bunch of stuff in a fire not too long ago, stuff off-site . Duplicates of Pump shotguns, K frame revolvers, Lever action rifles, and about 40 or so USGI or Colt 7 rd mags...and the 1911s they fit. Quite a few single shot shotguns, and .22 rifles as well.

So everyone please buy all new bling bling tactical stuff, please trade in your old antiquated pump guns with wood stocks...., blued K frames, and ...'cause one of these I am going to replace MY multiples - and I know what works - especially for me. ;)

I have 3 1100's in the smaller gauges, 20, 28, and .410. An 11/87 which is almost an 1100 and an Ithaca Mag10 for autos. Just two 870's, in 20 and 28 gauge. I don't have two of the same gauge and the same gun, except a couple of AR15's, but that don't count.

I'm just a sucker for a deal....
2 Winchester 1300's
2 Remington 870's
2 Winchester Model 12's
2 Winchester SX2's

Everything comes best in two. ;)

My current gun collection includes 2 S&W model 66s (3.25" and a 4") and 2 870s (one police model, and one an old wingmaster riotgun). Next on my list are 2 J-frame S&W revolvers and 2 M1As. I like to have 2 of everything, saves me from having drawers of different magazines, ammo, holsters, and whatnot. I also like knowing that if one breaks I have a backup until I fix it. Also I like to not have to get used to all sorts of switches, widgets, levers, and whatever else people use to operate guns. I am used to the guns I have, which makes me very confidant in my ability to handle myself.

I don't know why some people have to have a 1911, a double action revolver, a single action revolver, a Sig, a Glock, a Ruger Mk II, an AR-15, an M1A, a benelli shotgun, an 870, and so on. I could never get used to them enough for them to be any good.

Now that's strange. I have no multiples of any shotguns....[looks around safe again]

Must remedy that. I do have 2 O/Us although from different makes and gauges.
3 SxS all different makes and gauges. 3 Autoloaders two are Remingtons though different models (48 and 1100) 2 Pump guns, hmmm different makes and gauges here too.

WAIT! I've got it....

My multiples are in gauges!

4 12's
3 20's
1 16
1 410

Where is that .28? Oh yeah....be right back....gotta go to the store.

2 Beretta 303
2 Beretta 390 12 gauges --one is my main gun for hunting duck, goose, pheasant, yard varmint elimination, etc... it shows it too...the other is just a safe queen-a DU dinner gun that had the prettiest wood, and the price was irresistable

of the shotguns I have used, the Berettas just fit me better. I also prefer the position of the safety in front of the trigger, possibly because it is what I learned with

Wait a second...

Whaddya mean YOU don't have a 28 ga? Of all the folks that read ( or say they do) my posts I thought YOU would have already run out and bought one...slept on the couch perhaps, but at least had a 28 ga to keep you all warm and cuddly. :D

[I'm in trouble aren't I ?]

There is a reason(s) why I don't.

My bestest "multiple". One dozen each of H&R Topper in 12, 20 and .410. :D

Top dat one folks. :p

Hey being crazy keeps one from going nuts.

I have two of the same model target o/u, one in 12 gauge and the other in 28. Both have identical dimensions.

I have two rifles of the same model, one in 223 and the other in .270.

I had two 870s until recently when a friend talked me out of my 870P. I forgive him because I had a second pump gun. I've always had at least one 870.

I can't claim any multiples - quite the contrary! But then, my shotgunning habits are sporadic and diverse. Only commonality is gauge - all 12's except for Mossy 500C .. in 20G.

Cheapo Ted Williams is a knock-about fun gun - not for serious, well - anything much! Old S/S Sable - Spanish non-eject is rarely out unless for birds ... it is a classic pheasant gun. The old ( and beat up) Laurona O/U is another fun gun - throw it in truck type of deal.

Trap and skeet now is the Baikal O/U - a poor sub for the Citori I should never have sold. And finally in 12'a ... the 870 3" mag ''Special purpose'' ... an HD gun almost exclusively.

The Mossy - well, another GP gun if truth known.

So - multiplicity here is a non-event! I guess I celebrate diversity instead! :)

I try to have two of everything (the inside of my gun safe looks like Noah's Ark), and I have three 870Ps, one in my Crown Vic, one for the house, and one spare :).

Just my .02,

Hmmm ... three Remmy autos: an 11, an 11-48 and an 1100 (not dupes, but all 12-ga Rem autos ...)

All of my other guns are one-each.

Some day, I'll have twos, or threes or fours, of:
870s
possibly A-5s, 11-48s or 1100s
pretty doubles of the same kind, e.g., 12, 20 and 28
1911s
Model 19s/66s OR M-10s, or Dick Specials. Maybe Pythons or 1917s. I haven't picked favorite pistols yet.

So far, I'm happy with one-of-each on rifles.

Wonderful wife gawked in disbelief. She asked, "How many of those things do you need?"
Maybe you could ask her that next time she goes to the shoe store! :p Just remind her that the guns are an investment and can be resold with little (hopefully) depreciation. Why not? As long as you can afford it. :)

As far as multiples go, I have two 870s. One with rifle sights and extended mag I built for slugs and another with a folding stock and pistol grips fore and aft I built for buckshot. Low recoil double-ought, of course. :)

We have 2 Winchester Model 50's.

One was my father-in-law's. Was supposed to pass to my wife, but when FIL died the gun was at brother-in-law's house and he didn't want to give it up. BIL wanted to make sure it passed to his son someday. Arrggghh...family!

Saw an ad in the paper for identical gun, so picked it up for my wife to try and make her feel better. A few months later, BIL of his own accord brought the FIL's gun to us. He asked us to please consider passing it to his son when the time came. Peace restored. I have no problem giving it to this nephew, he's an avid hunter and all-around swell guy.

I wondered if I was the only one who did this. If a gun is important enough to own. I always buy two. I am a huge enemy of Mr. Murphy. He always messes with my guns. But, if one goes down and has to go to the shop I always have a backup.

My two kids tease me. My 10 year old daughter wanted a cat. We ended up getting two. A cat and a backup cat. I still only have one wife. Can't go overboard on this concept...

dave3006, what kind of holster for your buc (back up cat)? :D

Having multiple copies of the same weapon. Gee, I wonder who here gets teased about that? :D (I mean if I can't get Tamara to roll her eyes at me at least once a day, what's the point of coming into the office?) :p

No fave weapons but I went with the 870 which is so simple even El Tejon can work on it. 4 870s all the same, "FBI Model" from Scattergun Technologies (yes, I'm Old School). Have just a "few" other shotguns, but 870s are for social situations.

Multiple 870s?

Let's see, there's a half dozen in 12 ga. outside the safe right now, just got done with a furniture- rearranging binge on three of them (only one got plastic). There are always three out as house guns when we are home. And there are... what? Can't recall how many in the safe or located elsewhere, 'on loan' or otherwise under other roofs we might happen to share sometime.

I like 870s, I like to mess around with them, mix and match stocks, fore-arms, bolt-on's, barrels. When I train students (not any for a while now, tho) it's good to have guns in various configurations for them to try for feel. Bought at the right price they are better than money in the bank IMHO. Nothing wrong with being able to play S-4 to your own infantry squad, have needed to do it a couple of times...

I've been accused of multiple redundencies, especially when it comes to .357 revolvers. I actually bought my 500 ATP so I could stash my other mossberg away for a rainy day. The only gun I have right I wish I could have multiples of is my Ruger Sp101..
