I posted this at the other forum but Ill post it here to so I can see whatcha think.

After dropping $1100 in Lowes on materials to close in the horse barn I stopped into my buddies shop.

I see he has some new rifles on the shelf and I spot a Ruger 10/22 in a color Ive never seen before. So I head behind the counter to check the tag and it says:

Type: Ruger 10/22
Condition: Poor
Available: 4/10

I see the color is not a new color but the stock has been sanded down to the wood. No sealer or anything. Its smooth but needs to be stained and sealed IMO.

It looks clean and I ask why the poor condition and my buddy says its because of the sanded stock. I ask why I havent seen the gun before and he says because he just bought it 6 days ago (I go into the vault quite a bit so I see whats on pawn and when its coming out)

The gun wasnt pawned but he bought it and he has to wait 7 days before selling it. So I ask how much and he says $100 out the door for me.

Ill pick it up tomorrow and get some pics. That makes (3) .22's Ive bought in as many weeks or so.

Marlin 60 = $100 OTD
Remington 597 = $100 OTD
Ruger 10/22 = $100 OTD

Next up is a Savage Mark II thats coming out in a few weeks. Ive already been told I can have that for $80 out the door.

Am I making wise purchases? I mean as in some decent deals?

The Marlin 60 is about right, the other two seem pretty good buys.

Shouldn't ever have a problem making a few bucks on any of them and all would be easy to sell if you ever need the money.

That Savage Mark 2 will be the most accurate of those. That Marlin 60 is a bit high, but still worth every penny, if in decent shape. I'd probably grab the Savage, the Marlin, and the Remington (see if he'll do $250-$270 for all 3), and then see which one you like best.

No.... I have already purchased these three at the prices stated. I paid $100 for each of them.

The Marlin is pretty much in mint condition. two very small nicks in the stock. Barrel is perfect. The Marlin if I remember right was a 2003 model. The Remington is in really good shape too and is a 2006 model. Im not sure what year the Ruger is yet. Still a good deal I think.

Ive actually purchased 9 guns from this guy since October of last year. LOL He is a friend so he gets me some deals. Yeah, the Savage is on the list. As soon as it comes out of Pawn its mine.

I do have a Chinese SKS, does that count? LOL

I'd give you $85 for the Mark II. ;) Actually I really do want one, where is this shop?

OK that does it! :) You get all these rifles at those prices and then you come here and ask if they were good deals? Here most of us are just hoping for even one like that and you get them on a regular basis  I never get great deals and I never win anything. Must be living wrong. :banghead:

LOL Woof....

Actually, the reason Im getting these deals is that I have been going into this Pawnshop for 3 years now and have made pretty good friends with the owner.

Im actually giving the owners son guitar lessons starting next Monday. Were gonna trade out guns for that LOL

Ive just made good friends with the guy and I know he's made a few bucks off me over the last 3 years. Im cool with him making some money off me as long as the deals are there. Heck he just takes me back into the vault where the pawned guns are and lets me look em over. I can see the tags when they are coming off pawn.

I also get to look in the computer there at the distributors prices on new guns as well as the stock list and what he has in the guns he has purchased or that are on pawn.

I know he gave the guy $40 for the Savage Mk2 when it was pawned. So I give him $80 and he makes $35 bucks on me and the rest is taxes.

He deals in new guns as well.

Id suggest everyone find a pawnshop owner they can become friends with LOL

except for the ruger, all the rest are great, especially good score on the remmy, becuase of it's superior sites, plus you can get hi cap mags for it. the marlin should be the most accurate.

I find that I can pretty much hit the target with all of them. I got the Ruger today but cannot date it. The numbers Ruger has on its site only go up to 2007 and my serial is much higher than anything on the site.

Im assuming it must be an 08. If you've got any suggestions on dating it let me know.

Of course the Pawn guy is only gonna give $40 for the Savage. Its a Pawn shop afterall.

Thank you easyrider and all. I am pretty happy that I could score 3 for $300.

Now with the Savage Id be at 4 for $380 LOL

Rangerruck, I do like the sights on the Remy!

I wonder the same thing about how desperate some people must be to pawn some things off for next to nothing, especially in this day and age with Craiqs list or just word of mouth.

I run a business just down the street from a small pawn shot and I'm fairly decent friends with the guy, but he'd never tell you what he took some guns in for. New prices he'll show you his price and than add 10%, which is fair enough.

Buddy of mine just picked up a Savage 110 in 270 in good shape for 125.00 bucks, that was a good enough deal but to top it off it has a Leupold VXII 3-9 on it. He was in the right place at the right time when someone needed some money. That sorta thing NEVER happens to me.

I find going to pawn shops to be very frustrating with regard to pricing. I have some idea of what pawn shops pay and some of the prices just make me laugh. I'll leave the pawn shops for you all.

My local pawnshops are also INSANELY HIGH on prices.

What is worse, they are in collusion. They both set the same insanely high prices on the same items.

For example: They both have old beat up Mosin Nagant rifles at $190, when I can order online for $69.

What REALLY chaps my hind is when I go in asking if they can order a new firearm, they quote the MSRP as what they will be paying and "graciously" offer to sell it to me for ONLY FIFTEEN PERCENT over that price!!!

Okay, how about a transfer, what do you charge to do a FFL Transfer? One charges fifteen percent of the purchase price, the other charges eighteen percent?!?!?

I say that is Not the normal $25 or $30?

PAwn Shop owner: You do know I have to PAY for this FFL license right?

Needless to say, I have not done any business with either of them.

They must make a great deal off the pawn business, because I cannot imagine anyone paying their prices for firearms.

I have rescued several Marlin 60s from my local pawn shop for 60 to 70 dollars out the door. They were priced much higher, you just have to know what the rifle is worth to you and make an offer.

Kind of like buying a rug in Turkey. :D

I wish I could still get the thrill of shooting a .22 like I did when I was a kid.

I have a pretty little Winchester Model 9422 XTR. I seldom ever shoot it since I started collecting milsurp rifles. I went through about about a 100 rounds of .30-06 and 8mm yesterday. I could of shot that Winchester all day for a fraction of the cost. What's wrong with me?

Fella's;

Around here, Great Falls Montana, the pawn shops are mostly stark ravin' nuts about gun prices. I'm sure it has to do with having an Air Force base in town. Some innocent young man from Illinois gets transferred in & all of a sudden finds out that he can indeed own a gun. He goes "Woo-hoo!!" So does the pawn shop owner. I've personally seen used guns priced above full retail, it's disgusting.

Don't get me wrong, there are good shops & decent deals to be found around here, but it's just a fluke to find one in a hock shop.
