It took 13 months, a lot of wrong turns, a lot of drama, and plenty of anger, but I finally have my finished AK as of today.
When I bought it, it failed to feed properly. The first gunsmith didn't work out, the second one fixed it. He also refinished the metal. The butt stock was cocked funny, so he shortened it up to get it flush again. At this time the metal looked fantastic, the wood, not so much. Took it to the range one day, the butt stock chipped up near the receiver tang, as the way he shortened it put a lot of stress in that area.
I ordered a new stock from IWD, which I found only thanks to numerous threads mentioning them here, (Thanks THR). Finally got it together and finished.
So now, it really is done. And I can move on to the AR.
(If anyone is interested in the finish: This is a hard rock maple stock, stained in one coat of Minwax Sedona Red, rubbed in by bare hand, let dry. Then one coat of Minwax Red Mahogany, rubbed in by bare hand, let dry. Then 4 coats of Minwax Spar Varnish, clear gloss. Steel wool between coats.)
