My Deal of a Lifetime: What was YOURS?

Well, I was at the LGS yesterday and saw a 2" M15-3 S&W for $300. Pretty nice shape overall but a little nick at the muzzle and some incomplete chamfering at the front of the cylinder. I might have bought it if I didn't already have a perfect one at home already.

Best deal I ever got was helping a friend advertise part of his collection prior to his upcoming divorce. He gave me a 6" 1971 Python for the help.

This happens a lot, unknowing family member gives a great collection to some buyer/trader for peanuts.
I recall a gentleman posting a couple of months ago about a Lee-Enfield that he bought at a swap meet. He offered the lady 495 for it, she replied "5 bucks and it's yours."

Last August, at the Greensboro gunshow, I picked up - very quickly - a like new 3" 66-2...........for $300.

Fella had it marked as a 2.5". I gave him his full asking price rather happily. :) It is one of the Ashland run.

gvf,

I know your feelings about getting a good deal. 20 years ago, I wanted a new revolver, saw a nice 6" Python lying on a shelf, I asked to look at it, ask how much, when the guy said $275, I said "sold"! About 2 weeks later, I was back looking for a holster for it, the same guy ask about the Python, said he thought he'd made a mistake on the price, said it should have been $475, too bad! Still have that Snake dwnstrs in the safe too.

I get a lot of deals, but the best...

Has to be the Python 2.5in blued 1968 I just got about a couple months ago. I traded a Colt SP1 I got in trade for a Kimber I bought for $600.00, sooo, I basically got the perfect blued 1968 2.5in Python for 600 clams.

Last month a got a M1911A1 Springer loaded all stainless for $450.00 that has a custom shop installed match barrel and bushing, and trigger work.

Got a nice second gen AMT Hardballer in trade for a S&W Model 10-8 I had 200m clams into last week as well.

Last Spring I got a 3" Detective Special out of Puerto Rico. For $210.00, $265.00 out the door with the shipping and paperwork. It looked like someone had spilled some soda on it about 20 years ago, never wiped it off, and put it away never shooting it. Some cosmetic damage, but the insides were clean and the rifling factory-sharp.

That same month I got a 3" GP-100 for $250.00.

And a 3" Model 10-7 for $355.00 out the door.

Besides just buying guns, the best deal of my life was spending a week in a build class with Jim Garthwaite, making a custom LW Commander from unfinished parts. That wasn't cheap, but it was a hell of a deal.

Mint Baby Browning 25 ACP in the parking lot of a gun show for $40; some guy had given it to the guy I bought it from 35 years earlier in trade for some roof work.

Python with a four digit serial for a grand is the best I can do so far. Maybe the Super Blackhawk I got for 250 but it wasn't in the best shape.

No gun once-in-a-lifetime deal, but I did get a brand new Dillon RL550B for $150.
Guy had it for a few years, never even took it out of the box.
Paint was perfect - no scratches, no flaws.

Included dies & a conversion kit for 45-70 gov.
I don't have a 45-70, so I sold the dies & kit
& used the money to buy 2 conversion kits for calibers I do have.

dummy!!

You fellers sure know how to make a guy squirm! Back in November,my wife needed medicine, and, being on a fixed income,I did something I hated to do,but had to. I sold my Ruger stinless Redhawk, with two speed-loaders&red-dot sights,&BOTH Pachmyr &Hogue grips,9-1/2"bbl,---for$200!

I feel your pain brother, but I would have done the same thing. Some things are more important than guns.

Had a guy come in the shop wanting the barrels cut down on an old double barrel for home defense. I told him he would be better off with a pump and traded a used Mossberg 500 I had about $120 in for the Parker VH....

About 5 years ago I walked into my local gun shop. The guy behind the counter knew I collected Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles and produced a mint 1956 Mannlicher Schoenauer 458 Win mag with 7 boxes of factory ammo and a vintage metal velvet lined case with leather straps. I thought that he was teasing me because I thought I knew what it would cost. He then told me that the boss wanted to make $200.00 in the deal and sold me the whole kit for $700.00. I always wondered who the poor sap was that gave it away for $500.00.

Lifetime deal

On inauguration day I brought home a 642NL for a reasonable price. With the exception of a bequeathed shot gun, it's likely the only gun I'll own. (I know yawl are going "sure" and you could be right.)
I had a great P6 for a while but found over time I much prefer revolvers.

Several years ago, got a S&W 686+ 6" for just over $200. It had been shot, but not much. Last or second to last year before the stupid locks went on. In addition, it has the finest trigger of any revolver (double and single) I have ever shot. I'd never part with it (alive anyway).

Not mine, but a very dear friend who got me started in handloading nabbed a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine for $50 at the last gun show. Loudest pistol I've ever met! Darn accurate, too.

My best deal was a S&W model 10. It was nickel plated with a pencil barrel and only had 50 rounds through it, for $60. I later (much to my regret) sold it for $300,

I've had a bit of luck over the years: a 357 Ruger flattop from the first year they were made (has that purple/magenta look in the bluing) for $350 and a Model 10 for under $200 (looks like crap but functions perfectly). But my best deal was a Ruger Redhawk 357 magnum, 7.5" barrel, stainless. Got it in a straight up trade for a typewriter I didn't use anymore.
