Hello,
For those of you who don't read the Greybeard Outdoors forums, I thought I would show you what my Brother (a gunsmith) and myself created for my 44 mag. What I was looking for was a big bore handgun for hunting. We heard that no one made a muzzle brake for a Dan Wesson. My brother decided to take up the challenge with my 8" barrel. What we did was to take a rifle muzzle brake, neck it down slightly, rethread the barrel (could not match the threads) and match it all together.
I have only fired about 25 rounds so far, but it helps alot and I think it looks awesome. The recoil with full factory rounds feels like a heavy 38 or regular 357. I added Hogue grips, a weigland scope mount and a Bushnell Holosight to complete the gun. Let me know what you think. Maybe someday, DW will make an add-on for other guns. I don't think given the debirs that could fly, I would want to use it on a shorter barrel though.
I also think that it helped me with my accuracy. I was having trouble grouping shots at 25 Yards with the 6" barrel and iron sights. Now 1 of 3 things could be the reason. 1)The brake. 2)The red dot. or 3) The extra length of the Barrel. Whatever the reason, I am very happy with the results.

I am glad you are happy with the results. I, too, have an 8" DW .44 HB. Mine is the 744. I used it for silhouette for a number of years and it was very accurate, but I avoided the use of the ported barrels. I wanted to be able to get the barrel and shroud off when needed. I now have Pachmayr Presentation grips on it with a 6" light barrel. It is still very accurate and I still don't see a need for a muzzle brake.

Thanks for the kind words.

I agree that it is not needed. Of course what in our sport really is? :0

The brake was more of an after thought. The 44 is heavy enough to absorb the recoil pretty well without it. It does help though especially when shooting the heavier premium loads. I too did not want a ported barrel and risk not being able to get the shroud off. He is working on a Barrel nut to use (because of the re-thread) when I want to shoot it without the brake. Of course I still have the 6 or 4 if I want to go plinking! Dan Wesson's are awesome.

My 744 sat for a number of years. The cylinder locking bolt would pop out of position upon firing. I finally sent it to the factory and they fixed it. I also had them install the light 6" barrel. I have since rediscovered it. It shoots very well and is more pleasant to shoot than many other .44s.
